Flagship Models Rivaling Pro Max? Xiaomi's Pan Jiutang: Benchmarking Is Common, Apple Also Emulates

Deep News01-13

Xiaomi's industry investment partner, Pan Jiutang, recently commented on the trend of smartphone manufacturers benchmarking their flagship models against the Pro Max. Pan Jiutang believes that benchmarking is a common business strategy, and even giants like Apple and Google engage heavily in purchasing and emulating ideas. Previously, according to the blogger "Digital Chat Station," a certain phone maker's next-generation flagship is currently being evaluated against the Pro Max standard. Huang Xiaowen, co-founder and editor-in-chief of C Technology, stated that this year, perhaps all flagship phones from manufacturers will be named Pro Max, which could reduce user cognitive costs and lower marketing expenses for the companies. In response, Pan Jiutang commented that from birth to death, every individual is constantly imitating and learning from others, and benchmarking is the most common business strategy. He noted that not just Chinese companies, but even giants like Apple (Xerox/Braun), Microsoft, and Google also heavily buy and copy ideas. Pan Jiutang also remarked that one cannot step into the same river twice, and achieving success through imitation also presents immense difficulty and requires innovation. Users can criticize, but some companies criticize their peers' imitation often out of envy and jealousy. It is worth mentioning that the Xiaomi 17 series had previously faced controversy over its name. The Xiaomi 17 series employed a "generation-skipping naming" strategy, as its release coincided with Apple's launch of the iPhone 17 series. Some netizens believed Xiaomi was intentionally riding on Apple's coattails. In response, Lu Weibing, President of Xiaomi's Mobile Phone Department, stated that the naming of the Xiaomi 17 series was the result of team discussions based on long-term planning, not a last-minute imitation, and that generation-skipping naming was a consideration integrating both technological evolution and market strategy.
