Treasury yields in the United States saw a slight increase on Wednesday as market participants across Wall Street anticipated the Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate decision and the subsequent press conference led by Fed Chair Kevin Walsh. The 10-year note, a key benchmark for U.S. government financing, moved up by over one basis point, settling at 4.614%.
In parallel, the 2-year Treasury yield, which is more sensitive to the Fed's short-term monetary policy direction, also climbed by more than one basis point to 4.291%. Meanwhile, the longest-dated 30-year bond yield remained largely unchanged at 5.1%. A single basis point is equivalent to 0.01%, and it is important to note that bond yields move inversely to bond prices.
According to the FedWatch tool from the CME Group, market expectations are heavily weighted toward the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which is responsible for setting interest rates, keeping the current benchmark rate range of 3.5% to 3.75% unchanged at this meeting. Market pricing indicates a 76% probability of a rate hike in September.
Despite some cooling in inflation data, rising energy prices and renewed tensions between the United States and Iran are complicating the policy decisions for Fed Chair Kevin Walsh. Since 2021, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge has persistently exceeded its 2% target, and Walsh has continued to face inflationary pressures since taking the helm. The Consumer Price Index (CPI), a broad measure of overall inflation, unexpectedly fell last month, with the annualized inflation rate for June dropping to 3.5%.
However, in the weeks following that report, the conflict in the Middle East has escalated sharply, leading to another significant surge in oil prices. The U.S. Central Command reported that tensions between the U.S. and Iran flared again on Tuesday evening local time, with Iran launching ballistic missiles targeting U.S. forces in the Middle East. The Central Command posted on social media platform X that the attack originated from Iranian soil, but all incoming missiles were successfully intercepted. "The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched several ballistic missiles from within Iran in a premeditated surprise attack on U.S. forces stationed in the Middle East," the statement said.
