PagSeguro Digital Ltd. (PAGS) witnessed a pre-market plunge of 5.14% on Friday, following the Brazilian government's proposal to expand income tax exemptions for lower-income Brazilians and increase taxes on those who earn more.
The proposed tax reform jolted the markets, with the Brazilian real hitting an all-time low of 6.02 per dollar on Thursday. The financial sector, particularly companies catering to higher-income segments, faced significant selling pressure due to concerns that higher taxes could impact their customer base.
According to analysts, the tax reform could benefit companies like NU and Banco Bradesco (BBD) that have a larger exposure to lower-income segments in the near term. However, there are concerns about potential inflationary pressures arising from the reforms, creating uncertainty for the mid-term outlook.
