Valar Atomics Achieves Key Power Generation Milestone, Discusses Funding at $60 Billion Valuation

Deep News07-17

According to a source familiar with the matter, Valar Atomics, a three-year-old company specializing in small nuclear reactors to power data centers and industrial facilities, is in discussions for a $1 billion funding round at a pre-money valuation of approximately $5 billion.

The source indicated that Sequoia Capital, whose prior investment in Valar Atomics was undisclosed, is leading this round, which may involve a mix of debt and equity.

This funding round has not yet closed, so the terms remain subject to change. Valar Atomics completed a $130 million round last November, led by Snowpoint Ventures with participation from angel investors including Palmer Luckey, co-founder of Anduril, and Shyam Sankar, CTO of Palantir Technologies; its valuation at that time was not disclosed. Earlier media reports this year mentioned a funding round at a $2 billion pre-money valuation, though it is unconfirmed if that round was finalized.

This new funding discussion commenced less than two weeks after Valar Atomics reached a critical technical milestone at its testing site, the San Rafael Energy Laboratory in Utah. The company's self-developed reactor successfully generated electricity through a self-sustaining chain reaction, laying the groundwork for the technology's commercialization within the coming years.

Valar Atomics plans to mass-produce small nuclear reactors to create large-scale nuclear energy parks, or giga-energy bases, for continuous power supply to industrial facilities and data centers. In early July, the company announced a partnership with chipmaker Nvidia to build a small data center powered by its reactors.

Based in Hawthorne, California, this startup is part of the rapidly expanding new energy sector. Numerous energy startups are leveraging the AI boom and investor interest to promote clean, stable power solutions to AI companies and data centers.

For instance, it was reported that nuclear fusion startup Helion Energy raised $465 million in June, led by Josh Kushner's Thrive Capital, at a pre-money valuation of roughly $15 billion.

Valar Atomics founder and CEO Isaiah Taylor, 27, a former high school dropout with prior experience in automotive industry ventures, stated that his company's small modular reactors can generate up to one-third the power of a traditional nuclear plant, with faster production and lower costs compared to standard nuclear facilities.

In a March interview, Taylor said, "I want to solve all the pain points in the nuclear industry." His goal is to achieve scalable, high-efficiency mass production of reactors, with a manufacturing model "more akin to building cars or planes, not like the slow, inefficient process of building roads and bridges."
