Anthropic in Early Talks to Lease Apollo-Backed Stream Data Center Capacity

Anthropic is in preliminary discussions to secure up to one gigawatt of computing power from Stream Data Centers, according to a Tuesday report. Stream Data Centers, a facility developer majority-owned by Apollo Global Management, could host tensor processing units (TPUs) co-designed by Broadcom and Google within its premises.

Alongside TPUs, Anthropic may also deploy other AI chips such as Nvidia GPUs at the site. The talks have additionally explored the possibility of Google providing credit guarantees for the project, the report noted.

Reaching a deal with Stream Data Centers would represent a significant milestone for the AI model developer, which is seeking more direct control over the data centers used to run and train its AI models. Currently, Anthropic relies heavily on cloud service providers such as Amazon, Google, and SpaceX for its computing needs. Securing this and similar data center lease agreements could help reduce its operational costs.

Previously, Anthropic has entered into comparable lease arrangements with smaller data center suppliers that transitioned from bitcoin mining, including Hut 8 and TeraWulf.
