True Anomaly, a Colorado-based startup developing space interceptors for the Trump administration's ambitious "Golden Dome" space-based missile defense system, has announced a $6.5 billion funding round.

The four-year-old company is now valued at $22 billion, bringing its total funding to $10 billion. True Anomaly plans to use the capital to expand its business and nearly double its headcount to 500 employees by the end of this year.

"Space has become a war-fighting domain, and our adversaries are building space combat capabilities at an unprecedented scale," company CEO Even Rogers told CNBC.

The global space race continues to intensify, with private space companies benefiting from investor enthusiasm surrounding Elon Musk's long-awaited SpaceX IPO. Other startups, Vast and Sierra Space, have recently completed funding rounds of $500 million or more.

Concurrently, the U.S. government is working to return astronauts to the moon for the first time in nearly half a century through the Artemis program and continues to invest in space security.

Rising geopolitical tensions have spurred demand for defense equipment, creating significant opportunities for space companies, particularly manufacturers of satellites and systems capable of tracking and intercepting missiles at close range. The Trump administration is planning a $185 billion ballistic missile interception system, known as "Golden Dome," and has proposed increasing the defense budget to $1.5 trillion by 2027.

SpaceX's Starlink is the world's largest satellite manufacturer, with its Starshield business line dedicated to military and government clients. Other competitors include defense technology contractors and Amazon, which is expanding into space through its formerly named "Project Kuiper," now called "Leo."

Space interceptors represent a new business direction for True Anomaly, which also develops an autonomous orbital satellite called "Jackal" and an autonomous software platform named "Mosaic." True Anomaly is one of 12 companies, including Anduril and SpaceX, selected for the U.S. Space Force's "Golden Dome" missile defense interceptor program, awarded contracts worth up to $32 billion.

True Anomaly also plans to use the funds for new product launches and a large-scale factory expansion: over the next four years, the facility's size will grow from 140,000 square feet to 2 million square feet.

The funding round was led by Eclipse and Riot Ventures.
