August 11, U.S. stocks closed mixed with modest losses as investors digested a lull in earnings and awaited fresh inflation data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.11%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.06% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.32%. Steady megacap strength in Microsoft and Alphabet cushioned broader weakness in semiconductors, leaving the major benchmarks confined to tight ranges after a three-day rally.
Semis led decliners while select software and EV names outperformed. Nvidia (NVDA) fell 2.87% and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) slid 2.86% as profit-taking hit the AI trade; Intel (INTC) fell 4.06%. Lumentum (LITE) sank 8.61% and Coherent (COHR) dropped 14.24% after a cautious optical-components outlook. On the upside, Microsoft (MSFT) gained 1.21%, Alphabet (GOOG) added 0.67% and Palantir (PLTR) rose 1.87% on continued AI demand. Tesla (TSLA) inched up 0.70% while Oracle (ORCL) advanced 2.73% on cloud optimism.
Smaller movers were more volatile. Universe Pharmaceuticals (UPC) jumped 27.52%, Jin Medical (ZJYL) surged 35.81% and Burning Rock Biotech (BNR) rallied 23.23% among U.S.-listed ADRs, while Accendra Health (ACH) tumbled 50.00% and Silicon Motion (SIMO) dropped 9.96% after deal uncertainty. Direxion’s SOXS ETF climbed 7.44% as traders hedged chip exposure, whereas bullish leveraged fund SOXL sank 7.31%.
