Airbnb, Inc. (ABNB.US) announced on Wednesday a significant expansion of its services, moving well beyond its original home-sharing roots. The company is adding thousands of boutique and independent hotels, car rentals, grocery delivery, airport transfers, and luggage storage to its app.

The new hotel listings, which exclude major chains, will launch in 20 cities including New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, and Singapore, with plans to expand to more locations. Guests booking these featured hotels will receive up to 15% back in Airbnb credit for future stays. Furthermore, a new "Price Match Guarantee" will refund the difference in Airbnb credit if a user finds a lower price elsewhere.

Additional new services include: grocery delivery in over 25 U.S. cities via a partnership with Instacart; car rental services with a 20% credit for first-time users toward future stays; airport transfers in over 160 cities globally through Welcome Pickups; and luggage storage at more than 15,000 locations in 175 cities via Bounce.

Co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky stated in a release, "Travel shouldn't just be about convenience; it should be meaningful. The best trips help you explore, learn, and come home a little different than when you left." Chesky told media he envisions the platform eventually offering dozens or even hundreds of service categories. "I think we can build a platform that's a bit like the 'Amazon of services,' at least in the realm of travel and living," he said. He also expressed in an interview that the platform's ultimate goal is to become a "universal app for travel and living," with the app itself eventually functioning as an AI agent.

The launch also includes new AI features: a review summary tool, an AI customer support assistant now available in 11 languages, and a shared itineraries feature that pins bookings on a map while displaying nearby restaurants and activities. The company stated it plans to introduce an AI-powered listing comparison tool and a voice assistant for customer support later this year.

Airbnb will also offer experiences tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup across six host cities, including viewing parties and training camps with former players Abby Wambach, Julie Foudy, and Javier Mascherano.

Analysts note this push into new business areas comes as local governments increase pressure on Airbnb's core home rental model. In December, Spain fined the company approximately 65 million euros (about $75 million); Barcelona has decided not to renew rental licenses expiring in 2028; and New York has imposed a near-total ban on short-term private rentals since 2023.

The company reported first-quarter revenue of $2.68 billion, an 18% year-over-year increase, and raised its full-year revenue guidance. Airbnb stated it expects the FIFA World Cup to be its largest single event in history by guest volume, with host city markets adding over 100,000 new listings since October.
