Japan's Nikkei 225 index climbed 3% on the first trading day of the year, propelled by rising share prices of artificial intelligence (AI)-related companies and a weaker yen. On Monday, the Topix index also advanced by 2.1%. The yen depreciated by 0.3% against the US dollar, reaching 157.24.
