Shifting Dynamics in the New Energy Vehicle Consumer Market

Deep News09:11

The May Day holiday in 2026 witnessed a surge in the new energy vehicle (NEV) consumer market. Visits to multiple offline dealerships in Beijing revealed that models emphasizing family travel and technological upgrades have become the primary drivers of consumption, poised to stimulate holiday market growth. This bustling retail scene reflects a new industry landscape shaped by the interplay of factors such as diverging consumer demands and accelerated technological iteration.

△ Mid-to-large-sized SUVs have become a key focus for many families with children.

**PART 01 Sustained Growth in Family Travel Demand**

On the first day of the holiday, visits to several automotive brand showrooms in Beijing's Chaoyang District showed that mid-to-large-sized SUV models promoted for "family travel" were prominently displayed, attracting numerous consumers for inquiries and test drives. One prospective buyer, Ms. Li, stated, "With two children and elderly parents at home, our previous small car was simply insufficient. We're using the May Day holiday to look at larger vehicles for more convenient family outings."

A sales consultant at a NEV brand store reported, "Orders for our flagship six-seat pure electric SUV on the first day of the holiday doubled compared to usual days, and test drive appointments are fully booked until the holiday ends. Most shoppers are families with two children or multiple generations, who specifically request models with ample space and long range." The consultant noted that the core purchasing criteria have shifted from "experimenting with smart features" to "practicality for all scenarios." "Customers with budgets between 200,000 and 300,000 yuan are most concerned about whether the vehicle can accommodate strollers and camping gear, and if there are supercharging stations along long-distance self-driving routes. They are less focused on technical specs like acceleration times."

Evolving family structures are driving higher demands for vehicle space and practicality. In response, multiple automotive brands have increased R&D investment in the mid-to-large vehicle segment, launching more products tailored to family travel needs. According to incomplete statistics, since April, automakers have introduced over ten new large SUV models, including Nio's new large SUV ES9, XPeng's first large six-seater SUV the GX, Great Wall's Wey brand large six-seater SUV V9X, and Voyah's Taishan X8, with prices ranging from 300,000 to 500,000 yuan.

Gao Chengfei, General Manager of the IP Business Department at Tiaoyuan Marketing Consulting, commented, "In 2026, the large six-seater SUV market is expected to maintain its growth trajectory, with competition intensifying. On one hand, luxury brands are actively expanding into lower-tier markets; on the other, emerging brands are rising, continually launching cost-effective large six-seater models, thereby broadening consumer choice."

**PART 02 Refueling and Smart Driving Become Consumer Favorites**

As the NEV market matures, consumer expectations extend beyond driving range, with refueling efficiency becoming a critical factor. In one NEV brand showroom, Beijing resident Mr. Zhang was inquiring in detail about battery swap services. He said, "I have a busy work schedule and value my time. The battery swap mode is as quick as refueling a conventional car, significantly saving energy replenishment time. Previously, charging took hours; now, a swap takes just minutes, which is very convenient."

Elsewhere, another Beijing resident, Mr. Yan, expressed strong interest in supercharging capabilities. "Once, on a trip to another city, I spent over two hours charging en route. If the vehicle had supercharging, I could reach my destination much faster," he explained, noting his frequent long-distance travel needs and hope that supercharging technology would minimize waiting times.

Beyond refueling technology, the proliferation of intelligent driving assistance systems has emerged as a new growth driver for automotive consumption. A manager at a new brand store admitted, "Consumers no longer base decisions solely on price but also consider long-term value-added benefits. During test drives or configuration selection, customers frequently mention intelligent driving assistance systems, showing significantly higher acceptance. The reliability of features like automatic parking, lane keeping, and adaptive cruise control, along with the suitability of supercharging station benefits, are key considerations."

Currently, the integration of AI into vehicles is accelerating, making the smart cockpit a major industry focus. Numerous automakers, including Changan, Dongfeng, BAIC, BYD, Geely, Great Wall, and Li Auto, have announced partnerships to integrate Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen large model. Concurrently, Volcano Engine has launched a new-generation automotive AI solution, with its Doubao model already deployed in over 7 million vehicles across more than 50 brands. This marks the formal commencement of an intense competition centered on smart cockpits.

Zhang Siyuan, a special researcher, indicated that 2026 will be a critical period for automotive intelligent driving, characterized by the simultaneous advancement of technological refinement and mass adoption. Market penetration is expected to progress along dual tracks for both high and low-level automation. Specifically, the penetration rate of L2-level assisted driving is projected to exceed 70%, becoming a standard feature in models priced around 100,000 yuan, while L3-level conditional autonomous driving will see commercial application on specific highway sections.
