eBay has confirmed it will cut approximately 9% of its workforce as part of an effort to streamline operations and concentrate on its fastest-growing areas.
The reduction will affect roughly 1,000 employees. A spokesperson said in a statement: "As we work to capture the significant opportunities ahead, we are taking this step to ensure we continue to operate from a position of strength by aligning our teams and resources with our highest strategic priorities."
The company also said it will keep hiring in "priority areas that align with our strategy."
As of the end of 2025, eBay had about 12,300 employees. This marks the second round of layoffs this year for the online marketplace, following a 6% reduction in February that affected roughly 800 workers.
In recent years, the company has been steadily shrinking its headcount while increasing spending on artificial intelligence.
Earlier this year, eBay also acquired secondhand clothing resale platform Depop from Etsy — a brand with a strong Gen Z and millennial user base. The $1.4 billion deal closed in July.
eBay shares are currently up about 1%.
