GE Vernova (GEV) and Seatrium announced that their consortium has secured a contract from European transmission operator TenneT to deliver key elements of BalWin5, a 2.2-gigawatt high-voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore grid connection in the German North Sea, designed to supply renewable electricity to about 2.75 million households.

The scope assigns GE Vernova’s Electrification Systems business to provide the complete HVDC technology package, including onshore and offshore converter stations and associated control and protection systems, while Seatrium will design, build, transport and install the offshore converter platform.

Construction work is scheduled to begin on Jan, 1 2026. The project will feature an offshore converter station, an onshore converter at Bremen-Werderland and a combined 325-kilometre sea-and-land cable system, with commissioning targeted for 2032.

BalWin5 is the consortium’s fourth project awarded under its five-year framework agreement with TenneT signed in Mar, 2023, and marks its first win among TenneT’s German 2 GW offshore programs aimed at accelerating the country’s energy transition and enhancing grid efficiency.
