HK Opening Bell09:23

Market Overview

The Hang Seng Index (HSI) opened marginally softer, slipping 0.09% to 25,064.84 as investors weighed overnight U.S. rate-cut expectations against lingering China growth concerns. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index (HSCEI) eased 0.07% to 8,356.55, while the Hang Seng Tech Index (HSTECH) was almost flat, inching up 0.01% to 4,438.86. Early dealings reflected a cautious tone with bulls and bears locked in a tight tug-of-war after Wednesday’s muted Wall Street close.

Sector rotation was evident: semiconductor names caught a bid, buoyed by stronger pricing for memory chips and upbeat guidance from global peers, whereas transport and energy counters lagged on profit-taking. Auto names were mixed, new-energy vehicle makers edging higher but traditional parts suppliers losing ground. Internet heavyweights were directionless, leaving the market without a clear leadership theme.

Opening Summary

Hong Kong equities opened on a cautious note, with the HSI hovering just above the 25,000 mark after drifting 0.09% lower. Modest profit-taking in banks and energy weighed, while marginal strength in tech kept broader losses in check. The HSCEI mirrored the indecision, easing 0.07%, and the HSTECH was virtually unchanged at 4,439.

Within large-cap tech, the mood was mixed. Alibaba and Kuaishou paced early decliners, sliding almost 1%, whereas Baidu and SMIC managed gains above 0.8% on hopes of resilient AI-server demand. Tencent edged 0.4% higher, offering limited support to the benchmark.

Among individual movers, autonomous-driving play Pony.ai (PONY-W) leapt 5% to top the leader board, while semiconductor names Montage Tech and Basicsemi added over 3%, echoing overnight strength in global chip peers. Conversely, GPU designer Iluvatar CoreX fell nearly 4% after recent run-ups, and logistics-linked Baige Digital tumbled 4%.

Theme rotation favoured semiconductors and AI hardware names after upbeat industry data, while shipping, energy and infrastructure-linked stocks came under pressure as crude oil prices softened. No major IPO priced for debut today, keeping primary market activity subdued.
