Anthropic is reportedly evaluating a new funding round that could value the company at more than $900 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter. If successful, this would position the AI firm ahead of its long-standing rival OpenAI, making it the world's most highly valued AI unicorn.
The company is currently reviewing proposals from investors. A successful round would more than double its current valuation. Discussions are still in the very early stages, and Anthropic has not yet accepted any offers.
Previous reports indicated that Anthropic had turned down several unsolicited investment proposals valuing the company at $800 billion or higher.
The move comes as Anthropic accelerates its fundraising efforts, capitalizing on strong momentum for its AI software. Earlier reports suggested the company is considering an initial public offering (IPO) as soon as October this year. It is actively seeking additional infrastructure to meet growing demand for its products.
Anthropic declined to comment on the matter.
Google recently committed to investing $10 billion in Anthropic at a $35 billion valuation, matching the valuation from the company's funding round in February. Google plans to invest up to an additional $30 billion if Anthropic meets certain performance milestones. Amazon has also invested $5 billion in Anthropic at the same $35 billion valuation and intends to inject another $20 billion over time. It remains unclear whether either company will participate in the new funding round.
Founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI employees, Anthropic has since become a leading player in the AI sector. The company has developed a suite of AI tools designed to transform how businesses handle various tasks, from programming to cybersecurity.
In early April, Anthropic released a new model called Mythos, which is said to be capable of detecting and exploiting vulnerabilities in critical software. The company considers the model too risky for public release and has only permitted a limited number of firms to begin testing it on their own systems. However, media reports indicate that a small number of unauthorized users have already gained access to the model.
