Brazil's antitrust watchdog, CADE, approved a recommendation on Thursday to intensify the investigation into Alphabet's Google regarding its use of news content. The move aims to assess whether the tech giant may have abused its dominant market position. CADE members supported the proposal by its interim head, Diogo Thomson de Andrade, to return the case to its general superintendence for a formal administrative proceeding. This decision was based on observed changes in Google's conduct since the inquiry began in 2019.
De Andrade's fresh analysis highlighted that Google's behavior has evolved alongside the development of AI-generated features, which can synthesize information directly within the search interface. The analysis emphasized the potential structural dependency of news publishers on Google's search mechanisms for reaching their audiences. De Andrade noted that this could constitute exploitative abuse, where value is extracted from third-party content without corresponding compensation.
