Bitcoin Whales End Selling Spree, Adding $2.9 Billion in 60 Days

Bitcoin has spent months mired in a slump that has driven out retail traders, drained billions from crypto funds and turned one of its biggest buyers into a seller. Now, investors searching for signs of a bottom are getting a modicum of relief from an old source: Bitcoin whales are buying again.

Large holders have added about 43,000 Bitcoin over the past 60 days, worth roughly $2.75 billion at current prices, according to CryptoQuant, whose calculation excludes exchanges and mining pools. The cohort recommitted, after months of selling, when the coin started to trade around $60,000, according to the data, with balances from so-called dolphins — those with smaller holdings — also growing.

Bitcoin's Investment Case Hasn't Changed, BlackRock Says, Backs up to 2% Portfolio Allocation

Bitcoin’s investment case has not changed even as the asset trades 50% off its highs, according to a research paper published Tuesday by BlackRock.

BlackRock’s research sees crypto-specific leverage, slowing institutional inflows and selling from large holders as main drivers of Bitcoin’s decline.

BlackRock’s trailing 10-year analysis found that allocating just 1% to 2% of a traditional 60/40 portfolio to Bitcoin, funded from equities, would have improved risk-adjusted returns while broadly maintaining comparable portfolio risk characteristics.

Bitcoin Custody for Institutional Clients Is Coming to Citi Later This Year

Citigroup plans to launch Bitcoin custody for institutional clients later this year, letting them hold crypto and traditional assets through the same framework.

According to a Citi press release Tuesday, Bitcoin custody forms part of Custody+, a new suite of real-time custody solutions the bank launched alongside completing its US rollout of Single Event Processing technology.

The platform now processes over 80% of Citi’s asset-servicing volume in real time, cutting processing times for voluntary corporate actions by up to 92%.

The core pitch to institutional clients is simplicity. Traditional securities and crypto custody sit within the same integrated framework, so clients do not need separate infrastructure for each.

Despite Strategy Woes, 12 of 15 MSTR Institutional Holders Added Shares in Q2

Strategy says 12 of its 15 largest institutional holders added to their MSTR positions in the second quarter of 2026. The Q2 13F filings show combined holdings among that group climbed by roughly $700 million.

Strategy released the data to show that big investors still trust its stock. The company built its reputation on a “never sell Bitcoin” pledge, and it broke that pledge this year.

Capital International Investors remains the largest holder. It added $346 million, lifting its stake to $3.49 billion, or 9.4% of shares outstanding.

Bitcoin & Ethereum Spot ETF Flow

The overall net inflow of the US Bitcoin spot ETF on Tuesday was $189.3 million. The total net asset value of Bitcoin spot ETFs is $79.3 billion, and the ETF net asset ratio (market value compared to total Bitcoin market value) is 6.12%.

The Bitcoin spot ETF with the highest net inflow on Aug 18 was iShares Bitcoin Trust, with a net inflow of $143.57 million, according to SoSoValue.
