A prominent public research institute in South Korea reported on Monday that the nation's economy is maintaining its upward trajectory, propelled by robust exports and investments tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure both at home and abroad.
The Korea Development Institute (KDI), in its monthly economic assessment, stated that the country's economic conditions are steadily improving, driven by sectors closely linked to AI investment, despite ongoing uncertainties surrounding the situation in the Middle East.
The institute highlighted that as investment in AI infrastructure expands, both exports and capital expenditure are growing at a rapid pace, with manufacturing output in related industries continuing to expand. Industrial production rose by 3.1% month-on-month in July, a slight moderation from June's 4.4% increase, yet still surpassing the second quarter's average of 2.9%, signaling a stable improvement.
Fueled by a surge in chip prices, semiconductor exports more than tripled, contributing to a remarkable 68.7% year-on-year jump in South Korea's overall exports for August. Investment activity remains vigorous, with facility investment climbing 24.9% year-on-year in July, driven largely by increased spending on semiconductor-related plant and equipment.
However, the think tank cautioned that the broader economic improvement has yet to fully translate into household income gains, as private consumption continues to show weakness. The report noted that household purchasing power has seen only limited enhancement, leading to a modest recovery in consumer spending.
