China Pacific Insurance (Group) Co., Ltd. (CPIC) reported a sharp earnings contraction for the three months ended 30 September 2026, as turbulent markets weighed on investment results and revenue growth remained muted.
Third-quarter operating income fell 45.0% year on year to RMB 79.43 billion, while profit before tax dropped 86.7% to RMB 3.70 billion. Net profit attributable to shareholders declined 68.4% to RMB 5.63 billion, compressing basic earnings per share to RMB 0.58. The quarterly weighted average return on equity slipped 4.6 percentage points to 1.7%.
For the first nine months of 2026, operating income decreased 15.5% to RMB 291.56 billion. Net profit attributable to shareholders retreated 20.3% to RMB 36.40 billion, despite a positive RMB 0.96 billion contribution from non-recurring items—primarily the revaluation gain on convertible bonds. Profit before tax fell 36.2% to RMB 38.35 billion, with management citing capital-market fluctuations as the primary drag. Operating cash flow remained resilient at RMB 166.39 billion, just 1.8% lower than a year earlier.
By segment, CPIC Life recorded written premiums of RMB 267.65 billion in the nine-month period, up 1.4%, but new business value slipped 6.5%. Bancassurance led growth with a 7.1% rise in premiums, while agency premiums edged up 0.5% and the group channel was broadly flat. CPIC P/C generated direct written premiums of RMB 163.25 billion, an increase of 1.9%; non-auto lines grew 3.7%, offsetting a marginal 0.1% gain in auto. Underwriting discipline held, with the combined ratio improving 1.4 percentage points to 96.2%.
Total investment assets expanded 6.4% year-to-date to RMB 3,235.76 billion. Net investment yield eased to 2.40% (-0.20 ppt) and total investment yield fell to 2.50% (-2.70 ppt) amid lower interest rates and heightened market volatility.
Despite profit pressure, CPIC’s balance sheet strengthened: total assets rose 6.4% from year-end 2025 to RMB 3,344.65 billion and shareholders’ equity increased 9.3% to RMB 330.15 billion as of 30 September 2026.
