Crude oil prices declined as traders weighed U.S. President Donald Trump's claim of an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine, even as hostilities escalated in the Middle East.
Brent crude futures slipped below $104 a barrel, ending a two-day rally, while WTI crude fell back below $91 a barrel.
Trump posted on social media that the energy ceasefire took effect immediately. He made a similar claim last month, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said no final agreement had been reached.
Prices fell despite another attack on Saudi Arabia's main airport and a further strike on a tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital was hit again by Houthi forces on Sunday, a day after an attack on the facility killed 12 people.
Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries have severely disrupted refining operations and tightened global diesel supplies. Late last week, Trump said he was working with President Putin to bring Russian diesel to market. Prices for the global industrial fuel have surged amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the U.S.-Iran war.
The price spike has deepened discontent among American voters ahead of the November midterm elections. Trump has threatened to ban diesel exports and lift restrictions on the use of a tax-exempt diesel to lower prices.
Brent crude futures for December settlement fell 1.4% to $103.29 a barrel. WTI crude futures for November delivery dropped 1.5% to $90.49 a barrel.
