Lianyungang's "Mountain-Sea Classroom" Links Ideological Education Across All School Levels

Deep News12-06

Lianyungang has pioneered the "Mountain-Sea Ideological Classroom," creating a comprehensive chain of ideological education spanning universities, secondary, and primary schools. This initiative was highlighted during the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education's "Hundred-School Tour for Building a Strong Education Province," which recently visited four schools in Lianyungang. The program showcases the city's achievements in integrating ideological education across different educational stages and deepening reforms in the education system.

At Jiangsu Ocean University, the "Ocean+" ideological concept is embedded throughout the talent cultivation process. In the university's Marine Engineering Technology Research Center, Professor Zhang Huixia taught a "Structural Mechanics" class to sophomore students. She shared stories about the university's self-developed unmanned exploration vessel conducting research in the South China Sea, as well as the development of national projects like the "Jiaolong" and "Striver" deep-sea submersibles. She also guided students to explore how artificial intelligence could empower future marine engineering equipment.

"We hope students not only master professional knowledge but also learn about the innovators behind these major national projects, fostering a spirit of exploration and courage in this generation," said Zhang Huixia.

Lianyungang promotes a collaborative ideological education model where universities ("big hands") guide secondary and primary schools ("small hands"). Jiangsu Ocean University, as the lead institution of the first alliance, coordinates with eight member units to establish a cooperative education framework featuring "university leadership, inter-school collaboration, and resource sharing."

Shen Chunmei, Dean of the School of Marxism at Jiangsu Ocean University, explained, "Through regular lesson-planning meetings, we ensure continuity in the curriculum, tailoring ideological cultivation to students at different educational levels while breaking down barriers between stages."

As a key platform for integrated education, Jiangsu Ocean University partnered with Jiangsu Xinhai Senior High School to establish Lianyungang’s first high school-level Youth Marxism Institute. The institute adopts a "required + elective" course model, offering classes across two semesters with biweekly sessions, providing a robust platform for deepening theoretical learning and enhancing comprehensive literacy.

"The school plays a pivotal role in institutional innovation, curriculum redesign, resource integration, and teacher training, ensuring political identity and value guidance shape every Xinhai student’s growth," said Gu Aijun, Party Secretary of Jiangsu Xinhai Senior High School.

To date, Lianyungang has built a full-coverage ideological education system across all school levels, developing over 120 specialized lesson plans and achieving curriculum-wide ideological integration. Additionally, the city has consolidated resources to create more than 40 specialized courses, 60 local courses, and six research routes, with annual ideological activities reaching over 100,000 teachers and students.

Lin Tianhai, Deputy Secretary of the Lianyungang Municipal Education Working Committee, stated, "Moving forward, Lianyungang will further leverage regional characteristics, strengthen transitions between educational stages, innovate teaching scenarios, and refine evaluation mechanisms to advance the 'Mountain-Sea Classroom' initiative and enhance the effectiveness of holistic education."
