A heartwarming story of cross-regional compassion recently unfolded in Xianfeng County, Hubei Province, bringing together medical staff and local residents to support a Shaanxi couple facing hardship far from home. On May 2, a 44-year-old man surnamed Ji transported 8,000 jin of apples from Yan’an, Shaanxi, to Xianfeng County, Hubei, intending to sell them. During the journey, he suddenly fell ill but managed to drive himself to Xianfeng County Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for emergency care. After examination, he was diagnosed with acute cerebral infarction. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of medical staff, Mr. Ji’s life was saved, but he remained unable to move normally and required long-term rehabilitation.
Upon hearing the news, his wife rushed to the hospital to care for him. Unable to drive the truck to the market to sell the apples her husband had brought, she watched helplessly as the 8,000 jin of produce remained stranded at the hospital. With temperatures rising, the apples risked spoiling if not sold promptly—a situation that would have compounded the family’s difficulties.
Learning of the family’s plight, Xianfeng County Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine quickly stepped in to help. The hospital’s publicity department called on all staff to voluntarily purchase apples, hoping to alleviate some of the family’s financial strain. The initiative quickly gained traction, spreading through staff members’ social media circles and sparking a community-wide effort. Hospital logistics personnel volunteered to drive the apple-laden truck to the hospital entrance, where a temporary sales point was set up. They assisted with moving and weighing the apples, while staff flocked to the site, buying boxes and bags in a show of solidarity.
The movement soon attracted support from the wider community, with kind-hearted individuals joining in—some helping promote the sale, others sharing the story online. From the launch of the initiative on May 4 to 9:30 a.m. on May 5, it took just 19 hours for all 8,000 jin of apples to be completely sold out. Overwhelmed with emotion, Mr. Ji’s wife tearfully expressed her gratitude: “You not only saved my husband’s life but also helped us overcome a huge challenge.”
Inside the hospital ward, medical professionals guarded a patient’s health; outside, compassion flowed freely. A heartfelt salute to all who lent a helping hand in this touching display of humanity.
