[Click to register] Over the past two years, AI, chips, and robots have been trending topics every day, and everyone can see that technology is the direction of the future. But when it comes to actually investing in Hong Kong tech stocks, many people get stuck in the same place: they do not understand the Hong Kong market and do not know where to start. In fact, by understanding the changes in one index, you can grasp the key to the development of Hong Kong's technology sector.
An index is like a report card, compiled by professional institutions to measure the overall performance of a group of companies. The Hang Seng Tech Index is the most widely known report card for that group of technology companies in Hong Kong. On October 7, Hang Seng Indexes Company announced a major move: the constituent stocks of the Hang Seng Tech Index will be expanded from 30 to 50, while introducing a dual-group stock selection method based on "market capitalization + revenue growth," redividing technology themes, with official effect from December 7.
Why make the adjustment? Because Hong Kong's technology sector is no longer what it was six years ago. In 2020, there were only 146 technology companies listed in Hong Kong, and by the end of August 2026, that number had risen to 271, an increase of more than 80%. In the past, the main faces of the technology sector were internet platforms, but now AI large models, semiconductors, intelligent driving, and robotics have all arrived.
How will it be adjusted? The most direct change is the increase from 30 to 50. How are these 50 selected? The market capitalization group selects the 40 largest by market value, and the revenue growth group then selects 10 based on revenue growth over the past year, which is equivalent to adding a ruler for "who is growing fast" in addition to "who is the biggest." The new rules also add two thresholds: newly included companies must have an average daily turnover of at least HK$100 million over the past three months, and companies selected through revenue growth must have annual revenue of at least HK$500 million for two consecutive years, ensuring they have sufficient liquidity and scale.
The technology themes have also been reshuffled. The original six major themes — internet, financial technology, cloud, e-commerce, digital, and intelligentization — have been changed to digital platforms and solutions, artificial intelligence, advanced hardware, robotics and automation, cloud, and frontier technology. Among them, artificial intelligence is listed as a complete standalone theme for the first time, carrying the greatest weight.
Chart: Six Major Technology Themes in the Hang Seng Tech Index Revision How big is the impact of this adjustment? Hang Seng Indexes Company ran a simulation: the existing 30 constituent stocks still account for about 90% of the weight, while the 20 new additions together account for about 10%. By industry, the weight of advanced hardware rose from about 28% to about 32%, the most obvious increase; consumer discretionary fell from about 49% to 44%. Simply put, this is more of a gradual expansion than a complete overhaul.
Chart: Constituent Stock Weight Distribution of the Hang Seng Tech Index After Revision How can ordinary people participate in Hong Kong tech stocks? An index fund is a fund that tracks a certain index, and you can buy and sell a basket of companies just like buying and selling a single stock. The biggest advantage is that it is hassle-free and does not require researching individual stocks; you only need to judge whether you are optimistic about this sector. The E Fund Hang Seng Tech ETF Feeder Fund (A/C: 013308/013309) tracks exactly the Hang Seng Tech Index. After the index expansion, AI, chips, and robotics are becoming increasingly important parts of this report card. Understanding this change gives you one more way to participate in Hong Kong tech stocks.
