TGS to Develop Extensive Offshore Seismic Dataset for Equatorial Guinea

Deep News06-11

Transportadora de Gas del Sur SA (TGS) has entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mining Development of Equatorial Guinea to initiate the first phase of a national "mega seismic survey" project covering the country's offshore basins. This initiative is planned to create a large-scale offshore multi-client seismic dataset.

The initial phase of the project will involve the reprocessing of approximately 27,273 line kilometers of two-dimensional (2D) seismic data and around 35,000 square kilometers of three-dimensional (3D) seismic data, with completion targeted for the third quarter of 2026.

According to TGS, its "mega seismic survey" is a coordinated and unified 3D seismic dataset covering extensive contiguous areas. It is designed to support geological interpretation, enhance understanding of structural and stratigraphic frameworks, and help reduce exploration uncertainty.

This project represents the first stage of a broader initiative aimed at creating a coordinated and seamless seismic data product for all of Equatorial Guinea's offshore basins. The long-term vision for the entire project encompasses approximately 46,343 line kilometers of 2D seismic data and over 59,000 square kilometers of 3D seismic data.

The company stated that the "mega seismic survey" will apply its latest imaging technologies to address subsurface geological challenges and support exploration activities in both the Rio del Rey and Rio Muni basins.

David Hajovsky, Executive Vice President of Multi-Client at TGS, commented: "The Equatorial Guinea mega seismic survey is the first of its kind for the country. It will apply TGS's latest imaging technology to tackle key subsurface geological challenges and help mitigate exploration risk in the Rio del Rey and Rio Muni basins."

"This data product is intended to provide clients with a basin-wide regional screening tool to support trap identification, prospect ranking, and planning for future work commitments," he added.

TGS indicated that the project will integrate and reprocess historical datasets into a unified regional framework. This is expected to provide new insights into the exploration potential of Equatorial Guinea's offshore basins and support exploration decision-making.

The company further noted that this agreement aligns with its long-term objective of developing broader regional seismic products covering the Gulf of Guinea.
