On February 22, the U.S. men's ice hockey team clinched the Olympic gold medal, defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime with a goal from Jack Hughes. This victory marks the first time the U.S. has won the gold in this event in 46 years.
This is the first Olympic gold for the U.S. team since their victory over the Soviet Union at the 1980 Lake Placid Games. Over the past year, former U.S. President Donald Trump had frequently escalated tensions with neighboring countries in North America.
Following the U.S. team's win, Trump quickly extended his congratulations to the new gold medalists.
He posted on Truth Social, stating: "Congratulations to our great U.S. hockey team! They won the gold! Wow!" and "What a game!"
To underscore the American victory, the White House released an image depicting a bald eagle swooping down on a Canada Goose. This was in response to a post made one year prior by then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on social platform X, in which he wrote: "You can't take our country—and you can't take our national sport."
