DiDi Global Inc. has forecasted that the pre-holiday ride-hailing peak for the May Day holiday will begin at 3:00 PM on April 30, reaching its highest point at 5:00 PM and continuing until 7:00 PM. Throughout the holiday period, overall ride-hailing demand is expected to increase by 23% compared to pre-holiday levels. Demand for rides to destinations outside the user's home city is projected to surge by 56%, while trips to major transportation hubs are anticipated to rise by 63%.
The cities expected to see the highest volume of ride-hailing demand during the holiday remain major metropolitan areas such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Chongqing. However, cities with distinct cultural and tourism appeal are predicted to experience more significant year-on-year growth in demand. These include Taiyuan, Changsha, Luoyang, Nanchang, Zhuhai, Harbin, Nanning, Nantong, Fuzhou, and Huizhou among second-tier and above cities; and Urumqi, Hohhot, Hengyang, Xining, Changde, Luzhou, Mianyang, Yibin, Sanya, and Anshan among third to fifth-tier cities.
Data from DiDi's carpooling service indicates that bookings for destinations like Huangshan, Wugong Mountain, and Fuxian Lake have grown more than fourfold compared to pre-holiday levels. Demand for rides to "cultural destinations," such as popular concerts, museums, and stage performances, is expected to increase over 36% week-on-week. Requests for "value routes" are projected to grow by more than 40%. The Greater Bay Area and Yangtze River Delta regions remain the most active areas for carpooling, with Guangzhou and Nanjing expected to lead.
Travel to Hong Kong is also seeing high demand during the holiday. DiDi predicts that ride-hailing demand from mainland tourists in Hong Kong will increase by nearly 50% compared to ordinary days. Popular destinations include Disneyland, Ocean Park, The Peak Galleria, Central Harbourfront, and the Hong Kong Palace Museum.
Car rental bookings through DiDi have increased by 30% compared to the same period last year, with over half of the orders coming from new users. The top 10 cities for vehicle pickup are Beijing, Guangzhou, Urumqi, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Lanzhou, Guiyang, and Nanning. Half of the users opted for new energy vehicles, a figure 2.1 times higher than the previous year.
Data from DiDi's charging services shows a new trend of self-driving tours in Jiangsu following the "Su Chao" league, with charging demand in cities like Yangzhou, Changzhou, and Wuxi expected to increase by 54%, 38%, and 16%, respectively, during the holiday. Driven by coastal holidays, charging demand in Qinhuangdao, Zhanjiang, Wanning, Yantai, and Zhuhai, as well as refueling demand in Huizhou, Yantai, Dalian, and Qingdao, are all projected to rise significantly. Refueling demand in cities rich in culture and history, such as Zhengzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Jinan, and Xi'an, is also expected to increase by 20% to 50% compared to ordinary days.
