China Merchants Securities has issued a research report highlighting BYD Company Limited's launch of its second-generation Blade Battery and flash charging technology. The new battery enables charging from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes, setting a new record for energy replenishment speed in mass-produced vehicles. Live tests showed the BYD Seal 07 EV charging from 10% to 97% in approximately 8 minutes and 44 seconds. The company has set the charging上限 at 97%, reserving about 3% of battery capacity for brake energy recovery. China Merchants Securities maintains an "Overweight" rating on BYD.
The new battery will initially be equipped in 10 models, covering BYD's Dynasty Network, Ocean Network, Denza, and Yangwang brands. These include the Yangwang U7, Denza N9, Fang Cheng Bao Titanium 3, Seal 07, Tang, Sea Lion 06, Song Ultra, Fang Cheng Bao Titanium 7, Denza Z9GT, and Yangwang U8L. The Denza Z9GT boasts a range of 1,036 kilometers.
Performance-wise, the new battery shows improvements in low-temperature operation and safety. In -20°C conditions in Harbin, it charges from 20% to 97% in approximately 12 minutes. It also passed nail penetration tests after 500 flash-charge cycles without catching fire or exploding, following a 10-times national standard bottom impact test.
Supporting infrastructure development, BYD has proposed a "Flash Charging China" strategy, planning to build approximately 20,000 flash charging stations by the end of 2026, including 18,000 urban stations and 2,000 highway stations. The company has currently constructed 4,239 stations and plans to deploy the first 1,000 highway flash charging stations before the May Day holiday.
China Merchants Securities believes the technological advancements significantly strengthen BYD's competitive advantage. The second-generation Blade Battery, combined with charging network development, substantially improves energy replenishment efficiency for pure electric vehicles, narrowing the gap with refueling experiences of conventional vehicles. The integration advantages across battery technology, vehicle platforms, and charging networks are expected to further strengthen BYD's technological moat and accelerate the rollout of premium brand models.
Against the backdrop of temporary sales pressure earlier this year, the new generation battery technology and product cycle are anticipated to boost market expectations and help BYD reestablish differentiated competitive advantages.
