Report Suggests Video Game Retailer Could Drop its Bid for Online Marketplace, Shares Rise in Pre-Market Trading

Deep News08-10

According to news reports, GameStop is considering withdrawing its $56 billion offer to acquire eBay, a move that has driven the video game retailer's stock price up more than 2% in pre-market trading.

In May, eBay rejected this unsolicited takeover bid from GameStop. The e-commerce platform described the proposal at the time as "lacking credibility and attractiveness."

In June, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen stated that he would forgo a $35 billion compensation package, which was contingent on meeting specific performance targets, in order to allow the company to focus its resources on pursuing the acquisition of eBay.

GameStop's ambition to buy eBay has puzzled Wall Street, primarily due to the size of the acquisition price relative to the buyer's own market value. GameStop offered $56 billion for the acquisition, while its own market capitalization was less than $9 billion as of the close of trading last Friday.
