The center leverages consumer complaint data from the Black Cat Complaints platform to analyze the automotive recall landscape from multiple perspectives, including distribution patterns, market trends, and industry hotspot issues, providing an objective reflection of consumer industry development, trending public opinion events, and corporate service quality.
A total of 7,109,327 passenger vehicles were recalled in August, with 11 recall announcements issued during the month. This represents a remarkable 27-fold increase compared to July 2026, signaling a significant surge in recall activity.
US brands lead the recall wave
The August recalls covered imported, joint venture, and domestic Chinese brands. Breaking down the numbers by country of origin: Tesla Motors accounted for 5,716,552 vehicles recalled, representing a dominant 80.40% of the monthly total. Domestic Chinese brands including Xiaomi, Leapmotor, XPeng, Zeekr, Lynk & Co, Chery, Dongfeng, Arcfox, Geely, and Hongqi collectively recalled 1,392,748 vehicles, accounting for 19.59% of the total. Japanese brands saw Toyota recall just 18 vehicles, representing less than 1%, while Korean brand Genesis recalled 9 vehicles, also less than 1% of the total.
Body and interior issues top the recall list
When examining the root causes behind August recalls, two primary categories emerged: body and interior defects, and advanced driver assistance system failures. The body and interior category proved to be the most significant driver of recall activity during the month.
Tesla Motors initiated the largest recall of the month, affecting 2,965,459 vehicles due to body and interior concerns. The company recalled 973,156 domestically produced Model 3 electric vehicles, 1,956,713 domestically produced Model Y electric vehicles, and 35,590 imported Model 3 electric vehicles because the emergency mechanical door release handles were difficult to identify and operate. The manufacturer will affix warning labels to all affected vehicles free of charge and will use over-the-air (OTA) technology to upgrade window control software, adding a post-accident window lowering strategy to reduce safety risks. Vehicles that already have warning labels installed will not require additional labeling during this recall campaign.
Xiaomi also faced body and interior related recalls, affecting 390,435 vehicles. The company recalled certain 2024 Xiaomi SU7 series pure electric vehicles for the same issue involving emergency mechanical door release handles that were difficult to identify and operate. The manufacturer will provide free warning labels at the interior emergency mechanical handle locations and will deploy OTA software upgrades to optimize central control unlocking logic and window lowering strategies. Similar to Tesla's approach, vehicles already equipped with warning labels will be exempt from additional labeling.
Advanced driver assistance system issues
Lynk & Co issued a recall affecting 74,037 vehicles due to advanced driver assistance system problems. The issue stemmed from supplier manufacturing process fluctuations that could damage the internal power IC in the lidar sensors, potentially causing the combined driving assistance functions to exit or fail to activate. The affected models include the Lynk & Co 900, Lynk & Co 10 EM-P, Lynk & Co 07, and Lynk & Co 08. The manufacturer will replace the lidar units free of charge for all affected vehicles to eliminate safety hazards. The implementation process involves using the cloud platform to identify early diagnostic signals, providing advance warnings for potentially faulty vehicles, and proactively inviting customers to visit dealerships for replacement through the 400 customer service hotline. Vehicles that have already had their lidar replaced previously will not require another replacement.
