Citi Group (C.US) has recently appointed several new leaders for its healthcare investment banking division, aiming to elevate its industry standing and sharpen its competitive edge in the booming medical sector.

Global Healthcare Investment Banking Head Sumit Khedekar issued an internal memo confirming that the restructuring has finalized new heads for various North American healthcare sub-sectors, including biotech, medical devices, and biopharmaceuticals. Specifically, in medical technology, Brian McMahon has been named North America MedTech Head, reporting to Global MedTech Head Tai Hah. In biopharmaceuticals, Andrew Pucher and John Whittaker have been appointed Co-Heads of North America Biopharma, with Pucher continuing his role as Head of West Coast Healthcare. In biotechnology, Lin Yan has been named North America Biotech Head. For managed care and distribution, Bob Jones, who joined Citi in 2025, has been appointed North America Head. For acute and post-acute care, Jordan Termine has been named North America Head. In a senior advisory role, James Nicholson has been appointed Vice Chairman of Global Biopharma, while veteran Citi banker Ray Cooper continues as Chairman of Healthcare Services.

Sumit Khedekar stated in the memo: "The biopharma and biotech sectors represent one of the biggest growth opportunities for our healthcare investment banking business, particularly in the equity capital markets." As pharmaceutical companies increasingly rely on revolutionary technologies like gene therapy, the popular GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, and sleep disorder treatments to shape their strategies, major investment banks are also prioritizing the medical sector. Ongoing technological innovations continue to boost investor enthusiasm for corporate IPOs and M&A transactions, and banks aim to capitalize on this momentum.

According to Dealogic data, the healthcare industry has been the second most active sector globally for M&A this year, trailing only technology. In May, Citi's Banking Head Vis Raghavan explicitly stated at an investor conference that healthcare, alongside technology and industrials, is one of three high-growth sectors and a key focus for Citi's investment banking team. Recently, Citi has secured several major healthcare M&A projects: it advised the board of AtaiBeckley in its acquisition by Eli Lilly; it served as an advisor to Indivior Pharmaceuticals in its merger with Supernus Pharmaceuticals; and it acted as an advisor to Johnson & Johnson in the divestiture of its orthopedic business.
