Bitcoin Miner Sells 1,619 BTC at $47.7 Million Loss, Faces New Rental Cost Pressure

Cipher Mining Inc. (CIFR.US), a bitcoin mining company, sold 1,619 BTC for $123.4 million to prepare for upcoming data center rental payments, according to Woofun AI. The sale resulted in a realized loss of $47.7 million, highlighting the company's cash flow struggles during its transition to heavy assets.

The financial imbalance is stark in the latest report: interest expenses reached $66.7 million, while mining revenue was only $24.8 million, a ratio of about 2.7 to 1. As of the end of June, Cipher Mining Inc. (CIFR.US) held only 646 BTC worth $37.8 million. Quarterly mining revenue fell by $43.6 million compared to the same period last year, with a realized loss of $23.5 million in the second quarter alone.

Woofun AI compiled data shows that the significant gap between revenue and expenses forced the company to sell core assets to maintain its balance sheet. From a cash flow perspective, operations consumed $152 million in the first half of the year, while investments in assets and equipment reached $964.3 million. Although bitcoin sales generated $123.4 million, the company's operations were actually supported by $2.84 billion in net funds from financing activities, including $129.2 million from selling shares on the market. This heavy reliance on equity financing masks the insufficient profitability of its core business.

A more serious challenge lies ahead: the third quarter will be the first to include rental costs for the "Black Pearl" project. In addition to existing interest expenses, facility construction costs, and future BTC sales, this new variable will directly test the company's financing limits. This marks another significant liquidity stress test for Cipher Mining Inc. (CIFR.US) following its massive hardware investments.
