US Energy Secretary: Sanctioned Tankers Can Transport Legal Crude Through an Approval Process

Deep News10-20

US Energy Secretary Wright stated that the Trump administration is permitting sanctioned tankers to shift into legal crude transportation through an approval procedure.

Wright said investors have proposed acquiring idle sanctioned tankers, repairing and refitting them, and then operating them legally to transport unsanctioned crude.

Speaking at a Citadel Securities event in New York, Wright said: "We will move some vessels from what I call the 'bad guy fleet' to the 'good guy fleet.' They will no longer carry sanctioned oil."

Wright said: "This requires going through an approval process." He added: "We are turning dark ships into legally operating tankers. The sanctions have not been lifted."

Wright noted there are roughly 1,600 "dark fleet" vessels worldwide.
