South Korea's Customs Service announced on Monday that, amid nationwide efforts to stabilize the currency, it uncovered illegal foreign exchange transactions totaling 7.2 trillion won (equivalent to $4.92 billion) in the first half of 2026.
From January to June, the Customs Service investigated 792 cases of illegal foreign exchange activity, including the unauthorized transfer of foreign currency abroad and the concealment of overseas assets.
The Customs Service noted that some cases involved companies receiving export payments in cryptocurrencies instead of legal tender currencies like the US dollar, which prevented export earnings from returning to the country.
