International copper prices have surged to unprecedented levels, with three-month copper futures on the London Metal Exchange (LME) briefly touching $14,900 per tonne, marking an all-time high. On a year-to-date basis, the metal has recorded a remarkable gain of 27.35%.
The sustained upward momentum in global copper prices throughout this year reflects a confluence of short-term policy catalysts and long-term structural imbalances, which can be understood from three distinct perspectives.
First, persistent market expectations surrounding expanded US tariffs on copper are driving activity. Market consensus increasingly points to the US imposing a 15% tariff on refined copper starting January 2027. This anticipation has prompted American traders to accelerate stockpiling ahead of the policy's implementation, triggering a massive flow of copper from LME warehouses in Asia and Europe toward the United States. What has emerged is a trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic scramble for copper supplies occurring well ahead of schedule.
Second, copper supply faces enduring structural constraints, with near-term production cuts proving particularly acute. During the first half of this year, major copper-producing regions witnessed notable output declines. Chile, the world's largest copper producer, experienced disruptions from extreme weather conditions, while the Democratic Republic of Congo, the second-largest producer, formally implemented an export ban on copper concentrate.
Third, AI computing power and renewable energy together form a formidable demand engine, fundamentally reshaping copper consumption patterns. As the global race for AI computing capacity accelerates, new applications such as AI data centres have emerged as a powerful driver of copper demand. This shift not only transforms the composition of demand but also fundamentally alters the pricing logic governing copper's medium and long-term trajectory.
Turning to the domestic Chinese market, elevated copper prices yield divergent impacts across different segments of the industry chain. Upstream mining leaders benefit directly, yet supply-side structural constraints remain a lingering concern. According to Wind data, during the first half of this year, several major mining companies posted substantial year-on-year profit growth. For instance, Zijin Mining recorded net profits attributable to shareholders of 39.17 billion yuan, up 68.17% year-on-year, with the robust performance largely attributed to rising prices for gold, copper, and lithium. Nevertheless, most mining firms continue to grapple with persistent structural limitations on the supply front.
Midstream smelting operations are facing a deteriorating operating environment, transitioning from profitable processing margins to effectively subsidising production costs. In recent years, copper concentrate processing fees have plunged from hundreds of dollars per tonne under normal conditions into loss-making territory, upending the traditional revenue model of the copper smelting industry. Rising copper prices translate into severely compressed profit margins for smelters, with the core tension lying in their reliance on processing fees as the primary income source rather than benefiting directly from metal price appreciation.
Downstream fabricators confront even more formidable challenges. With copper prices climbing, processing companies are forced to absorb raw material price risks internally. Concurrently, elevated copper costs are accelerating material substitution across end-use manufacturing sectors. Notable examples include the aluminium-for-copper technology route in consumer applications, while copper consumption intensity in the new energy industry is also showing a gradual downward trend.
For China's copper industry as a whole, elevated prices are restructuring profit distribution along the value chain while simultaneously compelling industrial upgrading. The combination of smelting capacity reductions and consolidation, the adoption of aluminium substitution alongside technological innovation downstream, and the accelerated construction of strategic national reserves collectively represent the industry's strategic response to this new pricing cycle.
