Strategy (MSTR.US) Posts $21 Billion Q3 Profit, Balances Stock Buybacks with Increased Bitcoin Holdings

Stock News07:39

Strategy (MSTR.US) recorded a paper gain of up to $21 billion in the third quarter of 2026 driven by the revaluation of digital asset prices, a massive profit that not only shattered the company's single-quarter performance record but also cemented its market position as the world's largest corporate custodian of Bitcoin.

Despite macroeconomic volatility, the company has adhered to its dual-track strategy of "increasing Bitcoin holdings plus repurchasing stock," using refined capital allocation to expand its cryptocurrency exposure while actively repairing a balance sheet structure damaged by prolonged discount trading. This balancing act between aggressive Bitcoin accumulation and conservative buybacks has become its core approach to navigating market uncertainty.

On the Bitcoin holdings front, Strategy has demonstrated a steady and consistent accumulation pace. Between October 1 and October 4, the company purchased 334 Bitcoins for a total of $28.7 million, at an average price of $85,838.80 per coin. Notably, this purchase price was nearly 14% higher than its overall average holding cost of $75,440.70, indicating the company is willing to pay a premium at elevated levels to expand its reserves. With this, Strategy's total Bitcoin holdings climbed to 848,000 coins, a record high; during the final three days of September, the company made no purchases, reflecting an intermittent accumulation pattern.

To raise part of the funds for coin purchases, Strategy sold 92,894 shares of MSTR stock, generating $15.7 million, of which $13 million came directly from its U.S. dollar cash reserves. According to data compiled by Woofun AI, this small-scale, high-frequency accumulation strategy is designed to avoid causing dramatic market shocks while ensuring a continuous increase in the weight of crypto assets on its balance sheet.

Stock buybacks represent another key battleground. Strategy repurchased 1,033,168 shares of STRC stock for $102.6 million in September, then repurchased another 740,634 shares for $73.7 million in the first four days of October, bringing total expenditure to $176.3 million. The massive buyback funding came primarily from its solid U.S. dollar liquidity: $154.1 million from cash balances and $22.2 million from interest income. Currently, the preferred stock repurchase program still has $547.2 million in available funds.

From a financial structure perspective, as of October 4, Strategy held total U.S. dollar assets of $5.7 billion, including $4.88 billion in U.S. dollar reserves (specifically earmarked for paying preferred stock dividends and debt interest, with $142.5 million drawn that week) and $833.4 million in U.S. dollar cash (used for daily expenses and Bitcoin purchases). Disclosure filings show that of the quarterly earnings of $20.91 billion, $1.88 billion in deferred tax expenses must be borne, further highlighting the company's financial logic of using buybacks to offset tax burdens and enhance per-share value.

Industry comparisons show that Strategy is not alone. Competitor Metaplanet similarly sold 10,000 Bitcoins and purchased 11,000 in the third quarter, aiming to prove to credit rating agencies that it possesses the ability to quickly liquidate crypto assets. This focus on credit conditions reflects a common challenge facing large Bitcoin custodians during expansion: how to meet the traditional financial system's requirements for liquidity and stability while maintaining asset growth.

The Myriad platform has launched a prediction that Strategy is expected to hold more than 1 million Bitcoins by 2027. As the preferred stock has traded below its $100 par value for an extended period, Strategy's strategic path of enhancing shareholder returns through buybacks and consolidating long-term competitiveness through accumulation has become increasingly clear, marking the transformation of crypto-native companies from pure speculators into mature financial institutions with sophisticated capital operation capabilities.
