Japanese equities climbed, supported by solid corporate earnings, economic resilience and buying tied to dividend rights.
The Topix index rose 0.7% to 4,105.72 points, while the Nikkei 225 index gained 0.6% to 65,887.23 points.
About 70% of Topix constituent stocks closed higher, led by banks, general trading houses and some artificial intelligence and semiconductor-related names, while SoftBank Group Corp and the nonferrous metals sector lagged.
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc contributed the most to the Topix index, with its shares rising 2.1%.
Among the index's 1,635 stocks, 1,131 advanced, 431 declined and 73 were unchanged.
SoftBank Group Corp fell 3.1%, and Fanuc Corp dropped 2%.
