American fast-casual restaurant chain Chipotle Mexican Grill announced on Monday the opening of its inaugural location in Mexico this week.
The establishment is scheduled to launch this Thursday in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, which is part of the Monterrey metropolitan area. Chipotle stated that this opening is a component of a previously announced collaborative plan with the local restaurant group Alsea.
The company indicated that the Thursday opening represents the initial phase of a broader expansion strategy within Mexico, with further plans to enter Mexico City by 2027.
In a move to reignite growth following a year of stagnation, Chipotle aims to open an additional 350 to 370 new restaurants this year, attracting customers with new menu items. International expansion through partnerships forms a key part of this strategic approach.
The company explained that the Monterrey region was selected due to its "strong economy, growing population, and status as one of Mexico's leading centers for business and innovation." The new restaurant will feature the same menu as its existing U.S. locations.
Last year, Chipotle formalized its entry into the Mexican market by signing a development agreement with Alsea. Currently, the company operates over 4,100 locations globally, including in several countries across the Middle East and Europe.
