The second half of the Guangdong Super League regular season kicks off this weekend, with 21 teams vying fiercely for playoff spots.
The 10 matches in the sixth round feature a standout clash in the Eastern Conference between Meizhou and Qingyuan. The winner will have a chance to close the gap on the conference leader.
Meizhou currently sits third in the East with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss (9 points), while Qingyuan is second with 3 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss (10 points). The teams are separated by just one point, though Meizhou has played one fewer game due to a bye in the fourth round.
Meizhou's offense has been potent, scoring 12 goals while conceding only 3. Their goal tally leads the Eastern Conference and ranks second in the entire league, trailing only Zhanjiang. Defensively, they have been solid, allowing the second-fewest goals in the East. Their current third-place standing is below the team's pre-season championship aspirations, as voiced by several players.
Qingyuan boasts the youngest average squad age in the league but combines strong ability with on-field experience. The team has scored 9 goals and conceded 4, showing balance on both ends of the pitch. They have also set their sights on the title, with coach Hu Bo stating before the season that a championship is within reach if the team unites and gives its all.
The Western Conference is currently a two-horse race between Zhanjiang and Guangzhou, both tied with 4 wins and 1 draw (13 points). In the sixth round, both teams play at home: Zhanjiang hosts Yangjiang, while Guangzhou faces Yunfu.
Zhanjiang leads the league in scoring with 13 goals and has conceded only 2, making offensive firepower their key strength. Yangjiang, with a record of 1 win, 2 draws, and 1 loss, has scored and conceded 3 goals each, keeping clean sheets in two matches, indicating a sturdy defense that could challenge Zhanjiang.
Guangzhou has scored 9 goals and conceded a league-best 1, with their rock-solid defense forming the foundation of their title challenge. Their opponents, Yunfu, are still seeking their first win with 3 draws and 2 losses, but have shown defensive resolve with two clean sheets and are determined to give their all against the strong Guangzhou side.
In another key Eastern Conference match, Shenzhen hosts Shanwei. Shanwei secured a last-gasp equalizer in the previous round; can they now halt the conference leader's winning streak?
Aside from Yunfu, six other teams—Huizhou, Shantou, Shaoguan, Chaozhou, Zhuhai, and Zhongshan—are also aiming for their first victory of the season. Following the examples set by Maoming and Yangjiang last round, could more teams break their duck this weekend?
Recently, most teams across both conferences have adjusted their rosters by up to three players as per league rules. Will these new additions boost their teams' strength? The answer will soon be revealed.
Ticket reservations for the sixth round are in high demand. The booking deadline is 10:00 PM on June 10th. Those who haven't secured their spots should act quickly.
