Samsung Electronics has completed validation of its 16GB LPDDR6 memory on Qualcomm's next-generation mobile platform, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen6, according to industry insiders on the 23rd. The new memory supports a peak data rate of up to 10.7Gbps. This validation is the outcome of Samsung's sustained collaboration with global application processor (AP) manufacturers starting from the early stages of new product development.
Even after successfully developing a new product, memory makers must pass compatibility and operational stability validation processes with APs before the memory can be finally integrated into smartphones. Samsung introduced its seventh-generation mobile DRAM, LPDDR5X, in 2021 and completed operational validation on Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform the following year. Subsequently, it validated the memory with MediaTek's flagship Dimensity series APs, achieving the industry's highest speed of 10.7Gbps, and immediately moved into full-scale mass production.
Samsung is applying the same strategy to LPDDR6. The company participated in the development of the LPDDR6 standard under the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) and conducted early compatibility validation through technical exchanges with major AP manufacturers. Behind Samsung's accelerated push to commercialize LPDDR6 is the proliferation of on-device AI. As AI agent functions within smartphones continue to expand, the amount of data requiring processing is rising rapidly, elevating the importance of LPDDR chips that combine large capacity, high-speed processing, and low power consumption.
Samsung's LPDDR6 offers a data bandwidth up to 45% higher than its predecessor LPDDR5X, reaching 125GB/s, while improving energy efficiency by up to 21%. LPDDR6 is expected to rapidly expand its market share starting next year. According to market research firm Omdia, based on bit capacity, LPDDR6's share of total LPDDR memory shipments is projected to reach 3% in 2027, 9% in 2028, 21% in 2029, and 39% by 2030.
Choi Chang-seok, Vice President of the Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics' Memory Business Unit, stated, "We will deliver high-performance, low-power memory on schedule in line with our customers' commercialization timelines, leading the next-generation AI device market."
