Shares of IBM (IBM.US) rose nearly 4% on Friday, trading at $268.35.

The increase follows a significant announcement from the company regarding a breakthrough in semiconductor technology.

On June 25, IBM unveiled what it claims is the world's first sub-1 nanometer chip manufacturing process.

This pioneering technology utilizes a revolutionary transistor architecture, successfully advancing the process node to the 0.7 nanometer level.

According to the official announcement, the new 3D "NanoStack" transistor architecture enables the integration of nearly 100 billion transistors onto a chip the size of a fingernail.

This represents a transistor density that is nearly double that of the 2nm chip IBM introduced in 2021.

Compared to the current 2nm process, the sub-1nm technology is expected to deliver a leap forward in performance and energy efficiency.

At the same power consumption, computational performance could be improved by up to 50%.

Alternatively, at an equivalent level of computational performance, power consumption could be reduced by as much as 70%.

This dual breakthrough is poised to significantly address the urgent demand from generative AI, cloud infrastructure, and next-generation smart devices for high computing power and superior energy efficiency.
