Trump Vows Retribution Against Iran, Prompting Oil Price Surge

Deep News07-21 20:40

On Monday, US President Donald Trump vowed on social media that Iran would "pay a very big price" for actions resulting in the deaths of American service members. This statement heightened market concerns over the Middle East situation, driving a significant increase in international oil prices. Tensions between the US and Iran have been escalating, with the US conducting airstrikes against Iranian targets for multiple consecutive nights, while Iran has retaliated against US military assets in the region and threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz.

This has exacerbated risks to global crude oil supply. As the world's most critical oil transit chokepoint, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has declined substantially. Data indicates that by the end of May, over 1.1 billion barrels of crude oil had failed to reach the market. This supply shortfall even exceeds the impact seen during comparable periods of the 1973 oil crisis, the Iran-Iraq War, and the Gulf War. The International Monetary Fund has warned that the global capacity to buffer against an energy crisis is largely exhausted.

Market panic has fueled the rise in oil prices. The price of Brent crude futures briefly surpassed $90 per barrel on July 20th, reaching a multi-month high. The price of US West Texas Intermediate crude futures also rose in tandem. The oil price surge has transmitted to financial markets, with all three major US stock indices closing lower on Monday under pressure.

Although reports suggest mediators are attempting to broker a ceasefire, Trump's firm stance casts uncertainty over the prospects for a diplomatic resolution. Analysts note that if Middle East tensions persist, oil prices could face further upward pressure, introducing new risks to the global economic recovery.
