Elon Musk posted on the social platform X, criticizing the California government led by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom for tolerating fraud and wasteful practices.
Musk wrote: "Spending on waste and fraud by the California government will continue to increase until this 'Golden State' cooks all its 'golden geese.' Mark my words.
This has always been inevitable, and not because of Newsom or any single individual. The Democratic Party is completely controlled by unions and trial lawyers, and California is a one-party state.
Any politician who is nominally 'in charge' of California has two choices:
1. Stop the massive flow of funds to public sector unions and law firms. 2. Sacrifice the most productive citizens to pay for the graft.
They will always choose the second option because if they choose the first, they will lose the primary election.
Only bankruptcy can force California back on track, but until then, they will continue to feast on the geese that lay the golden eggs."
Musk was responding to a post by his friend, Silicon Valley venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya, who claimed that over the past 20 years, California's government spending has tripled, increasing from $155 billion in 2004 to $510 billion in 2025. Per capita, this means spending has surged from $4,350 per resident in 2004 to $12,940 per resident in 2025.
