Xiaomi's Pengcheng Reveals Safety Design Philosophy: Over 230,000 Simulation Tests Conducted

On August 3, the official WeChat account of Xiaomi Pengcheng published an article explaining the thinking and choices behind its safety design, emphasizing that safety is the foundation, the prerequisite, and above all else.

According to Xiaomi, on November 8, 2024, the Xiaomi Pengcheng N90 successfully completed its first real-vehicle crash test. Through 66 passive safety development tests, 72 component-level system tests, over 230,000 simulation tests, and 175 real-vehicle crash tests, the company established a comprehensive safety system for a vehicle of an entirely new form.

Built on Xiaomi's Kunlun architecture, the Xiaomi Pengcheng represents the second series from Xiaomi's automotive division. It introduces a new product form featuring ultra-large space, flexible layout, and multi-scenario adaptability. This new architecture and form present new safety challenges, so Xiaomi has specifically strengthened safety measures for this vehicle. The goal is to create ultra-strong safety tailored to the ultra-large space.

To ensure safety, Xiaomi conducted extensive omnidirectional crash tests far exceeding industry standards, equipping the vehicle with 12 airbags that cover all three rows of seats. During crash tests, Xiaomi performed protection development for all seating positions for both male and female occupants, as well as protection development for children in the second and third rows, exceeding industry benchmarks.

In terms of body structure, the Xiaomi Pengcheng uses high-strength steel and aluminum alloy, accounting for 90.4% of the body, leading its class among SUVs. Notably, 2,200MPa Xiaomi ultra-high-strength steel is applied in 16 locations. The A-pillar to C-pillar area incorporates 2,200MPa Xiaomi ultra-high-strength steel hot-formed gas-filled tubes with a length of 2,510mm. The single-side door ring includes multiple 2,200MPa reinforcement plates, with two reinforcements at the lower A-pillar to enhance small-offset crash protection, one reinforcement at the lower B-pillar to improve side-impact protection, and reinforcement in the rear door anti-release hook area using 2,200MPa material to reduce the risk of rear door intrusion into the passenger cabin during side collisions. Additionally, the Xiaomi Pengcheng features an integrated hot-formed door ring and a 2,000MPa integrated hot-formed front floor frame.

Inside the cabin, Xiaomi ensures safety during spatial changes across three dimensions: safety strategy for spatial changes, slide rail strength, and anti-pinch protection. Before the seats and space undergo position changes, the system performs a triple safety check, using a comprehensive anti-pinch strategy to reduce the risk of pinching. The Xiaomi Pengcheng uses 7-series reinforced aluminum alloy slide rails, which have passed 15,000 cycles of testing without loosening, with a maximum peel strength of 57,000N, ensuring seats remain securely fixed under extreme conditions. The vehicle features 39 anti-pinch protection points, covering all electric moving parts such as seat forward/backward movement, seatback angle adjustment, panoramic sunshade, and charging port cover.

To address extreme scenarios, Xiaomi designed the Pengcheng with several targeted features. It includes a triple-redundant safety door handle system: an external mechanical handle that automatically unlocks after a collision, allowing door opening from outside; an internal mechanical handle that allows door opening without unlocking the central control; and a redundant backup power supply for the door lock, ensuring normal unlocking even if the main battery and auxiliary battery are disconnected in extreme conditions. Furthermore, the Xiaomi Pengcheng is equipped with multiple emergency safety features, including dual emergency handles for the tailgate, a blowout protection function, and emergency wading capability.
