Producer Prices in South Korea Hold Steady During June

Deep News07-22

Data released by the Bank of Korea on Wednesday indicated that producer prices in South Korea remained stable in June, as declines in oil prices were offset by increases in computer and electronics prices.

Preliminary figures from the central bank show the Producer Price Index (PPI) was unchanged month-on-month last month, slowing from increases of 1% and 2.7% recorded in April and May, respectively.

Through May, the index had risen for nine consecutive months, primarily driven by higher oil and raw material costs due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

The data reveals that, compared to the same period last year, the PPI in June increased by 8.6%.

Producer prices serve as a crucial leading indicator for future inflation trends, as they influence the prices businesses charge consumers for goods in subsequent months.

A central bank official stated, "The rise in producer prices slowed in June due to lower energy prices, but price changes are spreading to other sectors such as non-energy products. This ripple effect is expected to exert upward pressure on consumer prices."

The Bank of Korea noted that prices for petroleum and chemical products fell in June as a temporary ceasefire in the Middle East region led to a decline in international oil prices.

In contrast, prices for computers and electronic devices, financial services, agricultural products, and industrial liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply services increased.

The data shows that the domestic supply price index, which reflects both producer and import prices, rose 0.7% month-on-month in June.
