A-share Midday Update: Shanghai Index Slips Nearly 2%, ChiNext Drops Nearly 5%, Coal Stocks Defy Trend with Limit-Up Surge

Stock News08-19 11:56

On August 19th, China's three major A-share indices opened collectively lower, with the market declining steadily through the morning session. This created a clear divergence pattern: indices tumbled broadly, most stocks fell, while defensive sectors like coal and real estate showed relative resilience. By the midday close, the Shanghai Composite Index was down 1.96% at 3912.17 points, the Shenzhen Component Index fell 3.97% to 14041.76 points, and the ChiNext Index dropped 4.98% to 3520.97 points. The STAR 50 Index shed 6.07%, and the Beijing Stock Exchange 50 Index lost 3.7%. Across the entire market, over 4,900 stocks declined, with only about 580 advancing. There were 31 stocks hitting the daily limit-up and 36 hitting limit-down. Total turnover for the morning session in Shanghai and Shenzhen reached approximately 1.62 trillion yuan, down about 18.2 billion yuan from the previous trading day.

On the upside, sectors such as coal, banking, oil and petrochemicals, and real estate held up relatively well. On the downside, sectors including semiconductors, CPO, storage chips, humanoid robots, and electronic chemicals led the losses. Overall, influenced by the sharp overnight slump in US tech stocks, market risk aversion intensified. Funds took profits from high-flying tech sectors and rotated into defensive areas like coal, banking, and oil and petrochemicals.

Sector Highlights

1. Coal Sector Strengthens Against the Trend

The coal sector opened higher and continued to climb. Baotailong New Energy Materials Co., Ltd., Shaanxi Heimao Coking Co., Ltd., Dayou Energy Co., Ltd., and Meijin Energy Co., Ltd. all hit the daily limit-up. Other stocks like Zhengzhou Coal Industry & Electric Power Co., Ltd., Liaoning Energy Industry Co., Ltd., Yunnan Coal Energy Co., Ltd., and Anhui Hengyuan Coal-Electricity Group Co., Ltd. followed with gains.

Analysis: On the news front, on August 18th, major coke producers in Hebei, Shanxi, and other regions issued price increase notices for coke, with hikes ranging from 50 to 55 yuan per ton, scheduled to take effect from 00:00 on the 20th. Additionally, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed that raw coal production by large-scale industrial enterprises in July was 343 million tons, the lowest since October 2021, down 10.1% year-on-year, marking the largest decline since November 2016. This, combined with peak summer electricity demand due to high temperatures, provided support.

2. Real Estate Sector Shows Active Performance

The real estate sector was notably active. 5i5j Holding Group Co., Ltd. and Nandu Property Co., Ltd. hit the daily limit-up. In the related home furnishing and building materials chain, stocks like Zbom Home Collection Co., Ltd., Lopsking, and Hotata Group also followed with gains.

Analysis: On the news front, on August 18th, the State Council released the "Decision on Amending the Regulations on the Administration of Housing Provident Funds," effective from September 20, 2026. The amendment removes income thresholds for withdrawing housing provident funds to pay rent, adds new withdrawal scenarios such as for decorating owner-occupied housing and paying property management fees, and supports flexible employment personnel in participating in the housing provident fund system.

3. Oil and Petrochemical Sector Supported by Oil Prices

The oil and petrochemical sector led gains, with shipping concepts also moving simultaneously. Nanjing Port Co., Ltd. surged straight to the daily limit-up.

Analysis: On the news front, after the US-Iran memorandum of understanding expired on August 17th, negotiations hit a deadlock, hindering shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. International oil prices rose, with Brent crude climbing to around $91 per barrel and WTI crude to around $85 per barrel. The higher oil prices provided support for the oil, petrochemical, and shipping sectors.

4. Banking Sector Rises Against the Trend

The banking sector trended higher during the session. China CITIC Bank Corporation Limited, Bank of Chengdu Co., Ltd., and Bank of Nanjing Co., Ltd. led the gains.

Analysis: On the news front, all three major US stock indices closed lower overnight. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index plunged 4.98%, and the 30-year US Treasury yield rose to 5.31%, the highest since 2007. Global risk appetite contracted, leading funds to shift toward high-dividend defensive sectors like banking.
