[Click to register] [Global Times special correspondent Zhang Feifei] The misdeeds of Shen Po-yang, a DPP Taipei mayoral candidate and a diehard "Taiwan independence" separatist, have recently been continuously exposed by media on the island, including his past advocacy of "drug decriminalization" and his smearing of the "Twin Cities Forum." On the 13th, he was again exposed as a "vanguard of resisting China" in public but a black-hearted scoundrel who swindles money and votes behind the scenes, and a hypocrite who indulges his family's efforts to make money from the mainland. Public opinion has exposed Shen Po-yang's ugly true face of selling "war anxiety" while profiting from "Taiwan independence." The Taiwan Affairs Office stated on the 14th that Shen Po-yang, while clamoring to "oppose China and resist China" and obstructing cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, also colluded with relatives to try every means to make money from the mainland, and his ugly conduct is despicable.
A Smokescreen for "Earning Red Money"
Hong Kong's Ta Kung Pao, after checking relevant information, disclosed on the 13th that in June 2025, after Shen Po-yang's father Shen Tu-cheng was exposed for using his company Zhaoyi Co., Ltd. to do business and seek profits in the mainland, Shen Tu-cheng, in order to evade sanctions, continued trading with mainland enterprises under the name of another company under his name, VWAY. Many media outlets on the island paid attention to the report. Taiwan's United Daily News and other media, citing Ta Kung Pao's report, said that public registration data show that Zhaoyi was established in Taiwan on February 26, 1991, while VWAY was established in May 2005 in the British Virgin Islands in the North American Caribbean region, with a registered address in the British Virgin Islands and a business address in Taiwan at Dunhua North Road, Taipei. Although the names appear completely unrelated, a careful comparison shows that the actual person in charge of both companies is Shen Tu-cheng, and VWAY's relevant approval documents also bear a personal seal engraved with Shen Tu-cheng's name. In addition, a comparison of business licenses shows that the two companies' office address in Ecuador is the same address. Ta Kung Pao said that after Zhaoyi was punished in June 2025, VWAY took over its general merchandise business including thermos cups and auto parts. From January 2022 to May 2025, VWAY's trade volume in the mainland totaled 38 transactions worth US$599,800. After June 2025, its trade volume rose sharply, reaching a total of 39 transactions worth US$689,800 in the mainland by March 2026, "with trade volume in just over half a year exceeding the total trade volume of the previous more than three years." Information captured by some websites and related information from trade websites show that from 2008 until before the sanctions, Zhaoyi often conducted trade and business cooperation with mainland enterprises, with goods covering textiles, building materials, bicycle parts, tires and other goods, with hundreds of transactions and amounts reaching hundreds of millions of yuan. Moreover, in order to evade sanctions, VWAY first declared customs and passed review for shipment, then changed back to Zhaoyi's name by converting the second-tier bill of lading. On April 21, 2025, Shen Tu-cheng signed a trade contract with a Hefei foreign trade company in the name of Zhaoyi for coffee cup goods, and agreed to declare and ship the goods for export on June 19, 2025. After the mainland imposed punitive sanctions on Zhaoyi on June 5, 2025, Shen Tu-cheng instructed company employees to declare customs in the name of VWAY to evade the punitive sanctions; after passing customs review and loading the shipment, he changed back to Zhaoyi's name by converting the second-tier bill of lading, and the payment for this contract was remitted by Shen Tu-cheng to the mainland enterprise using a VWAY account. Ta Kung Pao said that Shen Tu-cheng's switching of company names when doing business with the mainland was merely a smokescreen to evade punitive sanctions and continue "earning red money," and how could Shen Po-yang, who loudly clamors to "resist China," possibly not know what his father has been doing. The report also mentioned that the so-called militia training organization "Kuma Academy" founded by Shen Po-yang had repeatedly purchased large quantities of first-aid kits and field survival equipment from mainland e-commerce platforms, and resold them at high prices on the island to earn the price difference. Online data show that after Zhaoyi purchased goods from the mainland, it resold them to Ecuador and other places, "buying low and selling high to earn endless profits."
The Company Will Be Punished
At the Taiwan Affairs Office press conference on the 14th, spokesperson Chen Binhua said in response to a question that in June 2025, the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office announced punitive measures against Zhaoyi Co., Ltd., whose person in charge is Shen Tu-cheng, father of diehard "Taiwan independence" separatist Shen Po-yang. The mainland will never allow enterprises associated with diehard "Taiwan independence" separatists to seek profits in the mainland, and decided to impose punitive measures on VWAY, taking necessary measures such as prohibiting it from any transactions or cooperation with mainland organizations, enterprises and individuals. In recent years, Shen Po-yang has continuously engaged in "Taiwan independence" separatist activities on the island, maliciously peddling "Taiwan independence" propositions and "anti-China" ideas to the people of Taiwan, especially young people. In October 2024, the Taiwan Affairs Office included Shen Po-yang on the list of diehard "Taiwan independence" separatists, imposed sanctions on him, banned him and his family members from entering the mainland including the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, restricted his cooperation with relevant mainland organizations and individuals, and absolutely would not allow his associated enterprises and financiers to seek profits in the mainland. It also said it would take all other necessary punitive measures in accordance with the relevant provisions of the "Opinions on Punishing Diehard 'Taiwan Independence' Separatists for Splitting the Country and Inciting Splitting the Country" and pursue lifelong legal accountability in accordance with the law.
A Cover for Deceiving People on the Island
In fact, there have long been traces showing that Shen Po-yang profited from "Taiwan independence." According to previous media reports on the island, in March 2025, New Party Taipei City Councilor Hou Han-ting released relevant recordings, exposing Shen Po-yang as saying during fundraising that "if mainland Chinese missiles come over, it will be very helpful to us." Hou Han-ting sharply criticized that the so-called "help" was being able to raise more money, or help the DPP win votes and strengthen Kuma Academy's influence. He said that politicians should reduce risks across the Taiwan Strait, rather than incite confrontation to increase their own interests, and such words and deeds make people feel ashamed. In May this year, Shen Po-yang complained to the media about being poor, saying he had borrowed NT$2 million from a bank for the election and that his deposits had once fallen to only NT$180,000. However, this narrative was quickly exposed by media figures on the island: Shen Po-yang not only had TSMC stock, but also two Tesla cars. According to estimates based on Shen Po-yang's property declaration, his TSMC stock had risen 2.6 times, with a market value of at least NT$2.25 million, and together with his salary as a legislator, his asset value had long exceeded NT$2 million. The lowest price of the relevant Tesla model in Taiwan is NT$1,749,900, and two cars would be at least NT$3,499,800. A cross-strait issues expert said that Shen Po-yang's creation of a so-called "vanguard of resisting China" image is merely a cover to deceive people on the island and gain political attention. Hou Han-ting said on the 13th that the mainland has a complete manufacturing supply chain, and it is normal business activity for Taiwanese businessmen to use cost advantages and explore international markets. But the problem is that Shen Po-yang usually shouts "resist China and protect Taiwan," constantly warns Taiwanese people about the risks of exchanges with the mainland, and even advocates that people going to the mainland should be controlled, saying he wants to guard against the mainland while his family's business continues to depend on the mainland supply chain. Hong Kong's "Dot Dot News" said on the 13th that Shen Po-yang earns both renminbi and US dollars. The US "Open Society Foundation," through the US Agency for International Development, received subsidies, and its sponsorship list included the "Taiwan Democracy Laboratory," whose former executive director was Shen Po-yang, who is still a board member of the organization. The organization has received sponsorship from the "Open Society Foundation" since 2020, totaling nearly US$1.35 million. "It seems 'Taiwan independence' is a good business, no wonder Shen Po-yang transformed from an unknown scholar into a 'vanguard of resisting China' in just a few years." The article questioned that Shen Po-yang has plunged into the DPP Taipei mayoral election battle, but what vision can such a political opportunist bring to Taipei citizens?
