MedBot’s Toumai Remote Surgical Robot Earns EU CE Mark, Becoming First Multi-Department Remote System Cleared in Europe

Bulletin Express06-22

Shanghai MicroPort MedBot (Group) Co., Ltd. (MedBot) announced that its Full-department Application of Toumai Laparoscopic Surgery Robot for Remote Surgery (“Toumai Remote”) has secured the European Union’s CE Mark. The certification makes Toumai Remote the first commercialised remote surgical robot endorsed by EU regulators and grants immediate market access to more than 30 European countries.

Toumai Remote extends the capabilities of MedBot’s flagship Toumai Laparoscopic Surgical Robot to remote operations in urology, general surgery, thoracic surgery and gynaecology. The system features low-latency master-slave control, high-bandwidth communication and a high-stability architecture, and is compatible with private lines, 5G, standard broadband and space-air-ground satellite networks.

Regulatory traction is accelerating: prior to the CE Mark, Toumai Remote had already obtained approvals in nearly 20 countries and regions. The platform has enabled over half of all remote laparoscopic robotic procedures conducted globally, covering almost 30 countries across five continents. Since early 2026, surgeons in China, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Thailand and India have performed inter-provincial, cross-border and intercontinental operations, including complex cardiac, urological, general, thoracic and gynaecological procedures. The longest documented surgery spanned 18,900 kilometres.

Management positions the CE approval as a pivotal step in establishing remote surgery as a regulated, commercially viable medical model in Europe, underscoring the international competitiveness of China’s high-end medical-device industry. MedBot intends to leverage the certification to further expand its global footprint and contribute to setting standards, advancing technologies and developing commercial ecosystems in surgical robotics.
