Cerebras Systems (CBRS.US) has introduced a new high-speed computer powered by its own chips, a move the company says will widen its competitive edge over Nvidia’s offerings. At an event held Tuesday in San Francisco, Cerebras revealed that the new machine, dubbed the CS-4, is currently undergoing sampling with a select group of customers and is slated for broader availability in the latter part of the third quarter.
The CS-4 delivers performance several times faster than its predecessor, a device Cerebras had already touted as outpacing systems built on Nvidia’s dominant processors. This product upgrade marks a pivotal step in the company’s bid to challenge Nvidia within the AI data center hardware arena. Having gone public earlier this year, Cerebras remains a fraction of its competitor’s size, yet it aims to double—or even triple—its revenue over the next year. Since its listing in May, the company’s stock has climbed 19%.
Cerebras operates two core business lines: selling computers equipped with its chips and offering data center computing services based on its technology. Both divisions are laser-focused on capitalizing on the explosive spending occurring in the AI infrastructure space. During the event, CEO Andrew Feldman and other executives showcased demonstrations of the new hardware, asserting that it delivers AI-generated responses several times faster than Nvidia-based alternatives. The company is championing “ultra-fast output” as its primary differentiator.
Cerebras explains that by storing all the numerical data underpinning AI models directly on its oversized chip—thereby eliminating the need to access memory chips via cables—the entire process becomes dramatically quicker. The newly designed computer is also engineered to accommodate next-generation chips slated for release next year, featuring an upgraded cooling system. This enables it to house three of Cerebras’ existing processors and operate them at elevated speeds.
Feldman noted during the event that the company has applied lessons from earlier versions to develop a modular design, allowing for straightforward upgrades or reconfiguration to suit a wider array of peripheral systems. He said the fresh computer architecture will help Cerebras keep pace with surging market demand. On one front, it avoids reliance on memory chips currently facing supply shortages; on another, it is built using more readily accessible manufacturing processes. This, he added, will enable the Sunnyvale, California-based firm to deploy these systems more swiftly.
