Google's Gemini Achieves 1 Billion Users Amidst Internal Turmoil and External Pressures

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the company's Gemini application has surpassed 1 billion users, a milestone that comes as competition among leading chatbot providers intensifies. Pichai shared on social media that over 1 billion people now use Gemini monthly to generate new ideas and complete tasks, calling it the company's fastest-growing product and the 14th to cross the 1 billion user threshold. He praised Josh Woodward and the entire Gemini team, noting that more exciting developments are on the horizon. Woodward is a Google vice president overseeing Google Labs, Gemini, and AI Studio.

While the 1 billion user milestone is encouraging for Alphabet, the company continues to face significant challenges in the artificial intelligence sector. External competitive pressures are mounting, with OpenAI announcing on July 31 that its AI model now serves over 1 billion active users and 2 million enterprise users. OpenAI has expanded its ChatGPT advertising business to improve commercialization, introducing ads in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea after testing them in the US starting in February and expanding to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand by March. OpenAI stated that supporting its Free and Go plans requires substantial infrastructure and ongoing investment, and advertising helps fund this effort while enabling higher-quality free options. Users can upgrade to Plus or Pro plans to avoid ads, or choose to disable ads in the Free plan, which reduces the daily number of free messages. The company emphasized that ads do not affect ChatGPT's output quality.

SpaceXAI's Grok, despite trailing behind Gemini, ChatGPT, and Anthropic's Claude in market share, maintains a loyal user base and continues to release regular updates. On Tuesday, SpaceXAI launched Grok Bot, which functions as a team of always-on intelligent agents capable of working across different applications and tools. Initially developed as an internal prototype, Grok Bot quickly spread throughout the company, with teams creating bots for sales outreach, marketing campaigns, office operations, and bug fixes. The product is now available in beta for SuperGrok Heavy, Cursor Ultra, and Cursor Teams Premium subscribers on Apple's iOS. SpaceXAI noted that employees typically run multiple bots simultaneously, with one managing others, and a chief of staff overseeing specialized agents for each work area, including inbox management, expense management, recruiting, bug fixes, or operations.

Beyond external challenges, internal signals have raised concerns among market observers. Semi Analysis, an industry research firm, reported that Alphabet may have shelved its Gemini 3.5 Pro model. At the 2026 I/O developer conference in May, Pichai indicated the model would launch in June, but it has yet to be released. The Gemini 3.5 Pro was expected to be a key player in Alphabet's push to reclaim a leading position in AI frontier development, as the Gemini Pro series has been a critical benchmark for assessing the company's AI capabilities against OpenAI and Anthropic. Speculation suggests the model's actual performance may not have met initial expectations. Semi Analysis estimates that Gemini 3.5 Pro's capabilities are roughly comparable to Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.5, which was released in late November last year. As an interim solution, Alphabet has introduced more Flash models, including 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber. However, public evaluations indicate that the Gemini Flash series prioritizes speed, cost, and deployment efficiency, lagging behind Muse Spark 1.2, Grok 4.5, and industry open-source models in complex reasoning, programming, and agent tasks.

During Alphabet's second-quarter 2026 earnings call, Pichai reiterated his excitement about the company's progress in frontier AI and expressed confidence in Gemini's leading position. However, Semi Analysis noted that Gemini has fallen behind frontier models, ranking eighth in the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, trailing behind Muse Spark 1.2, Grok 4.5, and leading open-source models from Chinese labs.

Top talent exodus continues to be a pressing issue. Earlier this month, chief scientist Jeff Dean announced his departure after 27 years at Alphabet. He joins a growing list of prominent researchers who have left the company, including Noam Shazeer, a co-author of the landmark 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need," which laid the foundation for generative AI. All eight authors of that paper have now left Alphabet. Shazeer joined OpenAI in June, less than two years after Alphabet rehired him through an acquisition-style hiring deal worth nearly $3 billion. Shortly after his departure, Nobel laureate John Jumper left DeepMind to join Anthropic. D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria highlighted the trend of top talent leaving Alphabet, noting that many researchers are not interested in commercializing AI but want to be part of history, viewing Anthropic, OpenAI, or other startups as places where they can shape the future.

Despite Alphabet's unmatched investment in global data centers, chips, and infrastructure, computing power remains scarce. Every TPU allocated for training models, supporting Google products, or fulfilling cloud customer contracts represents a trade-off between competing priorities. According to multiple anonymous sources, some Google researchers are increasingly frustrated with limited access to computing resources, hindering their ability to advance cutting-edge projects, while Alphabet sells its proprietary TPUs to external customers, including Anthropic. Additionally, Alphabet's internal approval processes are cumbersome, with research outcomes requiring multiple layers of approval before becoming products, making OpenAI, Anthropic, and even younger startups more attractive to AI researchers who prefer lab work to financial metrics.

Alphabet's AI leadership has undergone a major reshuffle. DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis has stepped back from daily management and relinquished his role as chief of Gemini commercialization, transitioning to DeepMind chairman and Google chief scientist, focusing on long-term AI research. Former DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu has been promoted to senior vice president of DeepMind, taking charge of Gemini's research and operations, and reporting directly to Pichai. Additionally, Google co-founder Sergey Brin will be more directly involved in Gemini. Although Brin holds no formal executive position, he has re-engaged in Alphabet's daily AI operations since the launch of ChatGPT, participating in model testing, discussing technical strategies, and exerting increasing influence over Gemini's development direction.

The core of this restructuring is to move the AI decision-making center from London to Silicon Valley, aiming to reverse trends that have troubled the company since at least 2023. That year, Alphabet merged two previously independent and highly regarded scientific labs: Google Brain, based at its Mountain View headquarters, and DeepMind, rooted in London. Although the labs were combined under the name Google DeepMind, researchers continue to work on different continents. According to insiders, this arrangement has complicated decision-making and caused dissatisfaction among talent on both sides. A key focus of Alphabet's future business strategy is to transform the "research federation" that was scattered across the traditional systems of London-based DeepMind and California-based Google Brain into a Gemini product delivery machine centered in Mountain View, reporting directly to Pichai. Kavukcuoglu now holds both day-to-day operational control of Google DeepMind and the role of chief AI architect, meaning model pre-training, post-training, evaluation, computing power scheduling, and coordination with Cloud, Search, and developer products will be managed through a shorter decision chain. These personnel changes are not intended to weaken basic research but to separate "long-term scientific exploration" from "quarterly product delivery" in management, addressing the slow decision-making and commercialization issues that have persisted since the 2023 merger.

The Gemini 3 series models and the Nano Banana image editing tool have helped Alphabet regain some market attention. The company has also demonstrated that it still possesses the capability to develop frontier models. However, the more pressing challenge now is to quickly translate model capabilities into developer tools, enterprise services, and stable revenue. In the AI programming and enterprise markets, OpenAI and Anthropic have established first-mover advantages. Alphabet's senior management and board are concerned that the company's research strength has not yet fully translated into product competitiveness. Previously, Gemini carried multiple functions, including research, model development, application, and security, leading to a long decision chain and frequent conflicts between research goals and product timelines. The new management structure, which places Gemini's daily development under Kavukcuoglu, should help compress decision cycles and accelerate model releases and product launches.

Reports also indicate that some Google executives were dissatisfied with Hassabis's level of commitment to commercialization. AlphaFold is considered a controversial example. This protein structure prediction system earned Hassabis the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and had a significant scientific impact, but since the project was made freely available, Alphabet has not seen a commercial return commensurate with its investment. Sources close to the company deny any significant conflict, noting that Hassabis led Gemini's early launch and remains actively involved in the project's progress. Following the major overhaul of Alphabet's AI leadership, the effectiveness of the new structure depends on the smooth coordination of three tracks: research needs room for exploration, the model team needs faster iteration, and the product division needs to find users willing to pay. For Alphabet, top-tier papers and model rankings are no longer enough to allay external doubts. The coming competition will be fought on the basis of code tools, enterprise markets, product experience, and commercial revenue. Brin's return to the center of AI power signals that Alphabet views Gemini as a core battle requiring direct founder involvement. Hassabis's retreat to the scientific front line also indicates that the research-led model that has defined DeepMind for over a decade is changing. Alphabet has models, computing power, data, distribution channels, and a vast base of enterprise clients. Now, it needs to prove it can compress these resources into a faster product pipeline.
