Market Overview
At the open on Thursday, the Hang Seng Index fell 0.80% to 24,119.14 points, while the China Enterprises Index slipped 0.72% to 8,124.22. The Hang Seng Tech Index underperformed with a sharp 2.21% slide to 4,082.06, reflecting a cautious tone after overnight weakness in global technology shares.
Technology hardware and semiconductor counters led the downdraft, whereas selected consumer and banking names showed relative resilience. Home-appliance maker Haier Smart Home and state-owned lenders PSBC and Agricultural Bank eked out early gains, cushioning the broader market.
Overall breadth favoured decliners as traders awaited fresh policy cues from Beijing and monitored external macro signals.

Opening Summary
The Hang Seng Index slipped below 24,200 at the bell, tracking overnight caution in global equities. A 0.8% retreat left the benchmark hovering just above the psychological 24,000 mark, while the HSCEI followed suit with a 0.7% decline. The tech-heavy HSTECH dived more than 2% to roughly 4,080, signalling investors’ reluctance to hold high-growth names amid lingering macro risks.
Internet and hardware majors bore the brunt. Lenovo plunged over 7% after a recent rally, leading losses across the sector. Baidu, Kuaishou and Alibaba all fell more than 2%, and Tencent slipped nearly 2% despite reports of a reduced overhang from a shareholder selldown. JD Health provided a rare bright spot, eking out modest gains on defensive healthcare demand.
Beyond blue-chip tech, chip designers and semiconductor equipment makers suffered heavy profit-taking. Newly listed Biren Technology dropped 11%, while Montage Technology and Iluvatar CoreX each fell over 9%, reflecting concerns about tightening global export controls on advanced chips. Conversely, infrastructure play China CRSC and state banks PSBC and ABC rose on expectations of policy support for domestic investment and consumption.
Early trade underscores a rotation into defensive and policy-linked names as investors await upcoming mainland data and corporate earnings for direction. With the Hang Seng still above 24,000, market participants will watch whether bargain hunters step in or if global risk-off sentiment exerts further pressure through the session.
