According to the "2026 May Day Travel Trends Report" recently released by TONGCHENGTRAVEL, Nanjing has secured the second position among the most popular destinations for hotel bookings during the May Day holiday, trailing only Guangzhou. This highlights the city's strong tourism appeal within the Yangtze River Delta urban cluster.
The top 10 destinations for hotel bookings during the May Day holiday are: Guangzhou, Nanjing, Qingdao, Sanya, Hangzhou, Kunming, Kaifeng, Chengdu, Wuhan, and Changsha. Nanjing's second-place ranking is attributed to three core advantages: its irreplaceable historical and cultural depth, with a high concentration of iconic sites such as the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Confucius Temple, Presidential Palace, Ming City Wall, and Nanjing Museum; a large university student population fostering a vibrant youth consumer market; and its status as a major transportation hub, enhancing its capacity for passenger flow distribution.
With many regions implementing spring breaks in late April, combined with some travelers adopting a "take four days off for an 11-day holiday" strategy, the extended holiday period is reshaping travel patterns. TONGCHENGTRAVEL data indicates that the proportion of cross-province hotel bookings for May Day has increased by 15 percentage points year-on-year, with the average length of stay rising by one to two days. The extended stays of out-of-town visitors in Nanjing are expected to directly boost consumption across various sectors, including dining, scenic spot tickets, and cultural creative products.
Jiangsu Province is one of the more proactive regions in promoting spring break policies. Currently, seven cities in Jiangsu have aligned their spring breaks with the Qingming Festival, creating a six-day holiday. Although the Jiangsu spring break does not directly connect with May Day, the six-day Qingming "mini golden week" has already stimulated significant tourism demand, effectively warming up the market for the upcoming holiday. TONGCHENGTRAVEL data shows that search popularity for May Day travel products on its platform recently increased by 364% month-on-month, with tourism interest across Jiangsu continuing to climb.
Furthermore, influenced by the Middle East situation and international flight capacity constraints, demand for "overseas alternative travel" is concentrated domestically. Nanjing's rich historical and cultural resources offer unique appeal to tourists seeking immersive cultural experiences. TONGCHENGTRAVEL data as of April 17 shows that the proportion of family travel bookings for flights has increased by 13 percentage points compared to the same period last year. Nanjing, with its abundant family-friendly attractions such as the Hongshan Forest Zoo, Nanjing Science and Technology Museum, and Purple Mountain Observatory, is well-positioned as a favored family destination to benefit directly from this market trend.
From a longer-term perspective, Nanjing is transitioning from a "stopover city" to a "destination city." An increasing number of tourists are choosing to stay longer in Nanjing for in-depth exploration, rather than using it merely as a transit point to southern Jiangsu or Anhui. This trend is strongly supported by the data from this year's May Day holiday.
